dsjunior1388 81 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I am working on a rather large group project at Central Michigan University. My professor, a huge hockey fan, is having us write an anthology on whether a CCHA team would be viable here. Does anyone know where I can find a full budget breakdown for a CCHA or similar program, incuding travel costs, equipment costs, rink maintenance, etc.? This would be a tremendous help. prenny207 1 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I'm not sure if this will be public knowledge, but someone may have some insight on expenses and costs. Here would be a recommendation though. Bowling Green (who would be a similar size school) is looking to drop their hockey program from what i've heard due to the extreme costs. If you could get their expenses, that would be a perfect example. They do not have the large Brand Sponsors like a UofM or MSU, but are CCHA. I think this would work perfectly for what your Prof is looking for.Good Luck.
metalwinger13 1 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 i heard recently.. actually read.. that it costs atleast 1 million to run a D1 hockey team.. could be wrong.. heres the article i found it in and might be able to help yahttp://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/2508...tough-task.htmlwould be neat to see central with a team since they have ferris about a hour or so away, plus state and all the other CCHA teams close.. good luck with the group project
in da crease 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I don't know if you will find a breakdown publicly available. But I can tell you, one CCHA team's budget in 2003 was 1.2m. I'm sure it's higher now. It would be worth contacting some state universities. Those figures should be public at state schools. Things to consider...- Ice cost for practice, games, visiting teams practices, etc, assuming you rent an existing facility. Building would require 20-60m.- Game travel cost for 20 players, coaches, trainers, equip managers. Some would need to fly (Omaha and Alaska for sure)- recruiting costs - travel- Salaries - Coach, 2 assistants, trainer, equipment manager, dir. of hockey ops, possible marketing.- 18-22 scholarships- Marketing- Equipment- Title IX expensesBGSU decided not to drop hockey. Also, you have to consider that you will need to operate as an independant for a period of time. The CCHA is no going to open their arms and let another school in "just because". With 12 teams in that conference, they can't just add a 13th. Operating as an independant will increase your travel costs.
jrhky36 1 Report post Posted April 8, 2009 wanye state dropped their program last year because of expenses. i think they paid around 500k for their mens program. as stated try contacting the alth. dept at some hockey school.
epstud74 24 Report post Posted April 8, 2009 Try the U of Minnesota for a team budget study. Not very many teams probably could match their budget and revenue dollars. North Dakota or Michigan perhaps..maybe Wisconsin.
Gummer12 134 Report post Posted April 8, 2009 Those schools' budgets are going to be a far cry from what CMU is going to be able to produce, and won't help with his argument to bring a team to CMU. Ferris, Lake State, or maybe even Western, yeah, I know, Western would be better sized schools for comparison...actually I know people at Western's Hockey org...Give Dion a call, you can find his info on their site. He's their head EQ guy, and can give you a great perspective of at least the EQ and traveling side of the budget. Don't forget Medical costs as well, with Athletic Trainer, and supplies and medicines. My 2 cents, CMU would probably be best looking at D2 or D3, and get in with Hope, Cornerstone, and the like. Do they have a Club team? If not, that might not be a bad way to start too, most if not all schools in MI have club teams in the ACHA. I know UM, MSU, WMU do for sure. metalwinger13 1 Report post Posted April 8, 2009 Or maybe even get ahold of ferris since hockey is their only D1 sport

Let me remind you guys this is not a proposal to the school for a hockey team, it is an assignment for an English class, so discussing D2 or D3 is not relevant enough to the topic, which is specifically asking if CMU can support a Div. 1 team. interpathway 9 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 Hell no, haha. Something seems really off with those numbers...Considering alone that most of BUs players are on scholarship...Quick estimate...$25,000 a year times 20 players =$500,000....

BackinAction 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 Check out this site: http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstList.aspxThis where the article got the info. You can search any institution and pull up the revenue and expenses for each sport.
shooter27 116 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 Those numbers clearly don't take into account scholarship costs. They also probably don't take into account coaching and other salaries. If I had to guess it would probably be the equipment and travel expenses, maybe a couple othe miscellaneous expenses.
BackinAction 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 Agreed. Not sure what the factors are, but it revolves around Title IX which addresses the disparity in spending between women's and men's sports from a discrimination standpoint.

irishdman12 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 it's allegedly men's. as people have pointed out, i didn't really stop to think if the numbers made sense before i posted. the article says they are from Equality in Athletics filings that each team is required to make. My guess would be that maybe it's a number that omits scholly and coach salary numbers...
