Winter Classic 4

I don't know how the NHL dropped the ball on this one. Fenway parks and you choose the Flyers? The Yankees and the Red Sox rivalary is the biggest in baseball. The hype would have been hugh! Have baseball players from both teams drop the puck and more. I sometimes wonder what they are thinking when promoting the game?

You're forgetting the pull Ed Snider has with the commish. Vs/Comcast, etc...it's all politics, ratings, TV markets, etc....and I don't think the B's vs rags is enough of a rivalry right now.

Philly, yes. Montreal, definitely...but they were in the heritage classic and unfortunatley IMO the NHL doesn't see the draw in the US market for the habs.

They did just fine with the Flyers. Outside of the history against Montreal there really isn't a whole lot of rivalry for the B's that compares. At least with the Flyers they can bring up some history of the Big Bad Bruins vs. the Broad Street Bullies. Plus, Flyers/B's games for the last few years have had a bit of nastiness to them. I expect this to be the least friendly of the outdoor games to date.

It pretty much locks in the Rangers and Caps for next year though.

I agree. The left the Rangers out of this one so they could do Yankee Stadium later.

Or citi field. The Yankees aren't the only baseball team in New York who have expressed an interest to the NHL.

Poor mets. YS is going to be the NHL's choice every time.

Personally I hope they go out west. Minnesota or Colorado. Calgary perhaps. I know they probably won't for a plethora of reasons concerning advertising and revenues, etc. but I'll hope. :)

Minny and Colorado will get theirs before too long I think.

BTW, another place that has expressed an interest to the NHL is St. Louis. Thoughts on that one?

Football stadium is the only place they could do it right?

the Rams play indoors, the game would probably be at the new Busch Stadium. Besides that, it seems the NHL is favoring baseball stadiums because they arent being used at the time so they have more time to set up and put the rink in, whereas two years ago they had to do everything in like two weeks at Ralph Wilson, and then quickly tear it down and get out of the way for the next Bills game.

Why would the NHL go with a Triple A team's ball park over Yankee Stadium... :P

Sooner or later, provided anyone ever becomes interested in them, the Isles could host a game at the Mets stadium.

I heard a good one the other day on NHL Network...Dallas Stars (wearing North Stars jerseys) vs. Minnesota Wild. I think it would work.

Would be a great chance to show off Target Field, and the new football stadium, can't remember what it's called.

Not sure if you want that kind of animosity from the crowd.

The Gophers stadium is TCF Bank Stadium, and I hear that there have already been some talks of hosting a classic game in 2012. I am not sure if there is any truth to this or if they are all rumors.

Me being a Minnesotan wouldnt like the fact that the Stars would wear the old Northstars jersey's. I understand that they are in Dallas' past and not in ours, but there is still some bitter feelings towards them. I think if the Wild were allowed to wear them though this would work well.

Or the Devils I suppose.

Though for some reason I do enjoy watching the isles. They actually tend to be my preferred team to watch when I'm at school with MSG. Might need to watch a few more rags games now that they've got Gaborik though.

But back on topic, TCF bank sounds like it would be a nice place, and since it's college instead of NFL it could work logistically. Target would work too, but the NHL should go for bigger venues when they have a chance.

Others using the same thought process:

Habs v. Colorado (in Nordiques garb)

Calgary (Atlanta Flames) v. Thrashers

New Jersey (Colorado Rockies) v. Avalanche

Meh, drawing a blank. Mostly a bad idea anyways.

Just dont like any of those matchups, and I dont think teams in different citys should throwback to their ex city. All those matchups are not even inter-conference matchups. No animosity, not hardly any history there except for NJ/COL a little bit.
