Padded shirt for adult league?

Recommended Posts

Anyone wearing one of these? I currently have a Mission Thorax that I used for roller for a few seasons. I'm back on the ice now (thank god) and I'm wondering if anybody uses these in their league. For roller I removed the shoulder caps, but will be putting them back on once I find them in my house somewhere. It's a no contact league FWIW. Here's a link to what I'm talking about: Mission Thorax

No contact usually means "well kinda some contact time to time" I've seen and held the thorax a bit and well its better than nothing but I'd prefer the SW 5030s or bauer classics myself for that kind of thing.

If it's friendly with friends, I'd just assume forgo the shoulder pads entirely but if its a league of dudes you don't always know....yeah even then I'd go full real shoulderpads even if they're the most basic kinds out there like those.

I've only played one roller tournament so I don't know exactly what the difference in weight is, but if memory serves, the roller puck is somewhat lighter than the ice puck.

I'm in a couple of "No Contact" beer leagues and I wear a decent set of shoulder pads simply for protection against deflections. The bumping along the boards and the occasional crosscheck is one thing, but a deflected slapper can break a rib.

I actually have the Bauer Classics currently and don't like them at all. Yes it's considered no-contact but there is some tolerated. I've looked at the 5030's also and I am considering them as a few guys on my team wear them.

After looking at the last post about the puck being lighter I think you're right. That point slipped my mind. I might just look into a few other sets and find another pair instead of using my padded shirt.

New a guy who wore one in a no-check high level mens league and he liked it. I considered it for open hockey and for referee work.

I use them. They offer more protection than the Supreme classics of 5030s, with the obvious exception of the lack of shoulder caps/bicep protection. They're better than nothing.

If i was ever gonna wear pads in mens league which i doubt i ever will i'd probably give the Farrell Lacrosse pads a try or even the hockey pads without any of the plastic pads. They offer great mobility and the little square give you adequate protection. Hell they even make a tight moisture wicking undershirt with added padding you could try.

See that's what I was thinking. But as far as the shoulder protection goes...I'm not facing hits or giving them out. The chest of the Thorax shirt actually feels harder than the Classics to me.

It is much beefier than the classics, chest and back. I still have the classics sitting in my closet but the thorax is what's in the bag. Not only is the padding beefier but it fits closer but it's also longer. There are almost no holes on your chest and back as opposed to almost the entire core of the body being left open.

Yeah I'm gonna give them the nod in my next game. I can't find the damn shoulder caps for them though...I think they may have been lost in the move  Do you use the caps in games TBL?

After a couple of collisions in an adult drop-in no check/no slapshot deal I'm plenty thankful that I wear shoulder pads. A hit I had on Friday still has me pretty sore but without pads I'd imagine either shoulder or collar bone would've been broken. Stuff happens and I'd rather be prepared. It's a lot easier to get up and go to work the next day. ;)

earlier this season i took a wristshot on the right pec without shoulderpads and i couldn't do any stuff with my right arm for a week.... so yeah these are better then nothing.

TBL which version are you referring to? I've only seen the ones with caps...unless you have the sleeve-less version??

Yes.

A word on shoulder pads, A friend of mine was playing in a native hockey tournament, was playing D, passed the puck to his partner who then went to slap it off the boards, hit the ref in the chest and the poor guy died right there.

Even the littlest protection is better than no protection because it disperses the impact. I wear 5030's for drop in hockey and have been thinking about beefing them up a little bit so if I get one in the sternum I don't drop dead.

maybe try and find some old jofa's or rbk type pads and sew the shoulder caps/sternum protection onto your thorax shirt... that would be pretty awesome IMO

I keep having that same thought in the back of my head. That someones shot's gonna hit me in the chest and stop my heart. That's what I don't like about my SP50's. They have decent sternum protection, but they're so narrow there's not much protection over my chest. My "bulky" shoulder pads, my Easton ST4's, are better of course, but the chest padding's still not that thick. They're not high end though. The problem is I don't really like wearing the big shoulder pads. I thought about getting a padded shirt but I didn't know how solid the sternum/chest protection is.

I am looking at the Reebok padded shirt for beer league. No stores around here carry it, so my decision is based on the online picture. Does anyone have experience with this padded shirt?

a guy I play drop in with swears by it, but he also played junior A and is beefy enough to take a few shots, I think if you have a high pain tolerance then go with the shirt.

I know that Sidney Crosby wears a padded shirt underneath his shoulder pads... if that's saying something

How easy is it to sew or re-sew different shoulder caps on? I was thinking of maybe taking the caps off an older pair of pads i have and maybe using them on my shirt.

Ya I have the Rbk 6K padded shirt. I think its great all around protection IMO. It has been in my bag for Ice, Roller, and even Dek contact tournaments. It's not the best protection from a Chara like slap shot or wicked wrister but its way better than nothing. Plus the mobility protection factor is very nice! Pretty cheap too! The only down fall is your friends calling you Robo Cop in the locker room: D

i used the rbk shirt for two seasons of hockey and lacrosse, i ended up having it stolen out of my bag and i had to get some new bauer classics. i couldn't stand the shoulder caps on them so i cut them off...not very wise since i can't return them now but still... i really wanted to have the chest/back protection.

That's ironic. I just did this exact same thing and now my Classics are perfect! I took the plastic caps off with the intention of putting them on my padded shirt since I can't find the original ones. Then I tried on the Classics just for shits and they are perfect without the caps on. I only took the plastic caps off though...I still left the foam under neath attached if that makes any sense...

does so to me - always though Crosby is a complete pansy! :)

jocking aside though - that's a LOT of padding considering he already wears 9K shoulders?!

back on topic - I considered padded shirt for a while, but at the end just bastardized my One90 instead - cut a bunch of padding on the back + abdominal area leaving the rest intact - feels very nice & lite (air flow is totally awesome!), while providing decent protection to shoulders, spine, sternum & colar bones...
