How tight do you lace your skates

Recommended Posts

First 4 eyelets or so I don't tighten at all, I just leave them so the lace is taut. After that, I wrench them down. Loose in the forefoot, tight through the ankle and up to the top (which isn't that high since I'm in Eastons).

Don't tie the lowest quarter at all, then so-so, skip the top eyelet. (CCM Vector 10). Getting a little tighter as I get older/lazier, though.

Bottom 1/3rd of laces just a little snug, then middle 2/3rds nice and tight while giving a heel bang, then top 2 eyelets tight without any heel bang, when knotting the lace there is a very slight slip which I find evens out the top 2/3rds after a couple laps.

Fairly snug from the toe and I loosen up as I aproach the mid section. Cuz it kills the arch if its too tight!

Then finally snug on top.

I lace it snug, for the first 6 or so eyelets, outside in so it doesn't really loosen or tighten much. Then I lace inside out for the next 3 or 4 eyelets and pull them fairly tight. I skip the top eyelet. I also use Gorilla Laces so they don't come undone, they hold better than waxed. I'm using Vapors that were baked and bladder molded so they fit very well and I can almost skate in them with the laces untied.

How / where do you get the skates bladder molded?

CCM Fit machine?

As for my skates, snug but no tight on the forefoot, tight around instep/ankle bend, snug up top, may skip top eyelet if skate boot is high. I use waxed laces, no problems with loosening.

One of the Howie Meeker clips in the CBC archives has kids with moderately well fitting skates that had decent ankle support lacing up only the top three eyelets. The key was the ankle support.

I've always tightened mine pretty tight throughout the skate. Having skates with a proper fit certainly helps with mobility. Personally though I want the skate to be as if it's a part of my foot. It's also why I skate barefoot as well. I want my foot to be snug and secure in my skates. I feel it gives me great grip and feel for the ice/sport court.

Judging by the responses here... I'm almost by myself. I laces my skates fairly loose, I don't use the top eyelet and I really like my skates a good loose feeling. For me it helps in my skating and with the ankles being loose and free, tongues out and the RBK/CCM Lace lock it helps to keep a small snug tight around that but that's all that is remotely tight.

You seem to have a technique like me. I'm told the Graf Supra 707's would be perfect for it.

I skated 3 times on them and couldn't do it. I used to be in Grafs but then switched to the Vectors when they first came out. Never went back besides a middle switch to the RBK 8ks.
