Help with a new shaft

Recommended Posts

Alright, I'm looking for some advice into what shaft/blade combo I should go with. What I'm trying to do is get a nice shaft and be able to switch out blades on it. I keep wrecking the blades on my one piece sticks and I'm tired of replacing the entire stick due to a blade.

The stick I'm currently playing with is a TPS Response C4 in whip flex. I would be more than happy to just lop the blade off and throw a new one in but the shaft has started to basically split in half up the middle. I've cut this stick down to 56" from the heel of the blade to the top of the stick and I'm kind of confused about whether I should order a whip shaft or something a little stiffer because I don't know if I will have to cut the shaft down. As far as I can tell the stick I'm using does not have a dramatic taper to it either, but I'm unable to find much info on it.

To summarize a little:

1. Will I have to cut the shaft down to get a 56" length with a blade?

2. What is a good shaft that will last me a while?

3. Does a shaft/blade combo really feel the same as a OPS?

4. Do shaft/blade combos typically weigh more than a OPS?

5. Should I go tapered or standard?

6. Shafts and blades come with a 30 day warranty right?

All said and done I have at the very most $200 for a shaft and a blade, or hopefully two.

1. Some shafts are made for long hosel blades (synergy ST comes to mind) and if you put a short hosel blade in it, you probably won't have to cut it down as much, but it will perform differently due to different kick points.

5. This is PP based on where you want kick points and the feel of it, but I am a firm believer in tapered.

4. I would say typically yes, but it really depends on what combo you go with. I mean you probably aren't gonna find a combo lighter than a s17.

3. Given that many "OPS"s are fused shafts and blades, I would think that the difference in feel will come from the different blade used.

2. I really like the dolomite. I was using a vapor xxxx prior to that for months and had no durability issues.

6. I know shafts will usually come with warranties but some blades will not. I know for sure that Easton blades aren't under warranty.

And no, I can't count.

I currently use a dolomite 85 flex dolomite with a Mission pro stock mystery curve that turned out to be right down my alley.

But since you are looking for a whip flex and relatively short setup, you might be better off finding an intermediate shaft.

To summarize a little:

1. Will I have to cut the shaft down to get a 53 length with a blade?

1. if they're senior, yes.

2. anything top-end from bauer/easton/warrior should last a good long while.

3. some say no, im not good enough to tell the difference :)

4. will depend from model to model, probably slightly more, but if you match shaft and blade there shouldnt be a big difference from the OPS.

5. depends what the majority of shots you take are.

6. dont know, cant remember the last time i bought a retail shaft or blade.

I use both tapered and standard shafts, and I use wood blades in all of those (it's substantially cheaper)

1. get an intermediate shaft if you like whip flex

2. Easton Snergy ST or if you're really cheap grab older ultra-lites (same shaft different paint jobs) they are standard hosel

3. short answer no, but the long answer is that it's possible if you get composite blades that the feel will be very similar, plus you can mix and match (warrior blade with easton shaft)

4. with wood, yes but generally still very light

5. tapered blades are usually more expensive, shafts are about the same amount, I find that slap shots with tapered shafts aren't usually as poppy but that could just be me.

6. blades no, shafts yes, but I have yet to break any shaft, tapered or standard.

I usually play defense and find myself taking a lot of slap shots.

Sounds like the Warrior AK27 shaft is your perfect choice.

idk what kind of blade though, because an ak27 shaft and blade will probaby be a little over 200$

The AK27 looked like a good choice except it doesn't come in a flex lower than 85.

Do Senior blades fit Intermediate shafts?

I think a whip response is going to be most similar to a whip tapered shaft set up

Any shaft recommendations?

intermediate warrior, easton or bauer shafts would be your best bet. I recommend getting wood blades but that's pp

edit: int. shafts fit senior blades, at least with those companies.

better feel on the woody?

Definitely go with an intermediate shaft. My Warrior shaft itself is 53" uncut, my Synergy II is 52". With a blade they're both around 58" from heel to the top of the stick. Even if you go with a whip flex, cutting it down another 5" is going to make that thing over 100 flex atleast. Are you short or do you just play with a ridiculously short stick? Then again, if you're used to how stiff the stick is right now (it has to be like a steel rod), then maybe you won't mind how stiff a senior shaft cut down will be.

EDIT! My stick actually measures 56"

I don't know how I messed that up in the post...

I'm definitely the short part of the equation here, 5'9" and at 56" the sticks come up to my eyes in shoes...

To put things in perspective I'll list what I'm using/used and how the flex felt after being cut down.

TPS Response Armor C4 Whip Flex - Still feels really whippy

Easton S11 85 Flex - Feels a little stiffer than I would like but not bad

TPS XN10 Chrome 95 Flex - Feels like its made of titanium...

I'm kind of leaning towards a Warrior Dolomite shaft/blade combo right now. If I were to get an Intermediate its only a 70 instead of 75. And given that I'm using a TPS whip flex cut down I kind of think the Sr. 75 flex would be ok.

How does the Warrior 75 Flex Compare to Easton?

Sounds like you and I like the same flex. I cut sticks down to below my chin in skates or my upper lip bare feet, and I'm 5'8". So I do cut them down several inches.

I'm using a 75 flex Dolo and a 70 flex Easton Syn II shaft. The 75 flex Dolo feels like about 75-80 flex when cut down, where the Easton feels low 70's cut down. It's definitely whippier that the Dolo, but that Dolo is just a tank. I'll be getting another one when this one dies (been using it almost a year so far). If I could get the Dolo just a little whippier, it'd be perfect, but what can you do. Maybe if I found a 350-360 flex pro stock.

Anyways, the Ultra Lite and AK27 will probably be too stiff for you...and I even found the Z-Bubble 75 flex and Cyclone 70 flex to be way too stiff. Best bet would be the Synergy or Dolomite and a tapered blade, or maybe a One90/One95 intermediate if you need standard taper.
