Hockey Monkey, in person

Recommended Posts

It's looking like I'm headed out to sunny California this summer (Montreal also) and I wanted to know about the Hockey Monkey store. What exactly is in stock there, and what's just in the warehouse? I'm curious because the person I'm going to see is about 1.5 hrs away and if they have pro stock blades in-store I'm going to make certain I stop in and check out a whole bunch of curves.

Anyone know?

I'm not sure how much this info will help you but here goes.

I called the warehouse yesterday to ask them about their pro-stock curves and what sort of inventory levels they had. When I asked about a specific curve the girl who answered my call told me to call the pro shop, because she knew nothing about hockey. I called the pro shop and spoke to some dude who kinda knew what he was talking about, but mentioned that the mission pro stock tapered composite blades were kept in the warehouse. If I wanted he could have the specific curve brought to the store so he could tell me about it (which seemed like a lot of work) but I declined. He also mentioned that a lot of the pro stock curves had been moved to the warehouse to make room in the pro shop for the newer models coming in for the season. I ended up ordering the curve and 4 more and figured if I don't like it, I can always find someone who does.

I love those mission pro stock tapered blades.. $15 a pop ain't bad and they are really durable.

Anyways, I'd just give them a call if you have questions 714-210-2949. Still had them on my redial list.

From my visits they do not have the pro stock curves in the store. They're kept in the warehouse and they can have them in the store the next day (btw you'll have to pay before they move them to the store).

If you don't have a great LHS in your home area it's worth the trip to Monkey Time Sports, you will enjoy it. Call a few days ahead to make sure they have the blades you want.

I live twenty minutes from their retail shop. They typically don't have much in the way of pro stock stuff in the store, but if you call ahead and tell them what you want they can usually get it to the store within a day or two, depending on when you call. You don't need to pre pay for anything.

when I was out there last summer I had to pre pay for a shield and two blades before they brought them into the store...maybe I just look shady.

I've never had a good experience with Monkey's customer service. There's a bunch of "toe curve" pro stock dolomite blades. But when I called to request pictures of the curves I basically got yelled at for wasting their time. The curves I'm interested in are not featured on the, "MonkeySports TV," videos and the descriptions of the curves are generic at best. I'm sorry, but sending someone to the warehouse with a digital camera and a white towel to take nine pictures to email me does not sound like a terrible waste of time, especially when I will be buying a curve if it turns out to be what I'm looking for. Nothing turns me off to a company like bad customer service.

I'm pretty sure Hockey Monkey has the biggest selection of gear in so. cal., although Hockey Giant is good also and fairly close to Hockey Monkey. By the way, I saw Teemu Selanne in the Hockey Monkey store a couple of months ago; maybe that's a kind of endorsement. Other than those two shops, I think the Ice Station rink in Valencia / Santa Clarita has a nice shop, but I'm not that familar with all the vaious rinks anymore.

I just got a call from them saying they were out of stock of the Mission pro stock tapered blades I ordered. That's fine and all given that the website sometimes has problem updating inventory levels if they have archaic inventory systems... but I freaking called them 5 minutes prior to placing my web order to confirm that they had the blades in stock. The chick I spoke to said that they had 10+ so I ordered 4. TWO days later they tell me that they can't fulfill my order. I'm not just pissed they don't have the curve because its the only one I like, but the fact that I was lied to.

You think the guy who makes less than $9 an hour regardless of sales in the warehouse would do that? What planet are you from

The store has tons of retail stuff in stock, but little if any of the pro stock stuff besides gloves and a few OPS's. They'll transfer stuff to the store if they don't have it; I've asked them to transfer stuff to the store just so I could try it on, and it wasn't a problem.

I'm sorry for expecting other people to put the same care into their work that I do into mine. <_<

Its decent but overpriced. Last time I was in there they had an XN10 shaft that had been there for 4 years and were still asking $130 for it.

It does not matter whether I do or do not. I know it is a common reality that people in warehouse positions do not give a damn about their jobs or how they perform them, but that does not give them the right to treat a customer like dirt does it? Which is exactly how I was treated when I made the phone call to their warehouse. Now, if a major portion of your business came through online sales would you not want to be courteous and respectful to your customers even if you have to give them an answer they may not like. Was I upset that they flat out refused my request for pictures of the curves, yes. But, I was more upset I was yelled at and treated like a child for even asking. That is where my gripe with the employee who I spoke with comes from.

It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience, and it goes to show how one case can sour someone on a company that may be staffed by good people for the most part.

My experiences with their retail and warehouse staffs has been very positive the vast majority of the time. I work about 10 mins. from the warehouse and they've held stuff in their lobby for me to pick up so I don't have to pay shipping.
