How important is flex?

Recommended Posts

You also have to consider consistency and kickpoint placement when factoring in the flex. I know I'm beating a dead horse with this, but I am a firm believer that flex on a tapered stick needs to be measured in a different way than with a traditional stick. The important thing is how much effort is takes to load the stick one, two, six, etc... inches at the blade. Making the middle of the stick bend isn't relevant as long as the flex and performance gains are concentrated at the blade.

I agree tapered dont work the same way standard shafts do and with all the new things they are doing with kickpoints now (ellipse octagon power port etc) theres probably even more differences.

And how do they measure, is it lbs/inch deflected at the end of the shaft or with a blade inserted? and at what length of stick?

There should be some kind of standard for this that every body uses

Correct me if i'm wrong but it's the lbs of force that it takes to flex a stick 1inch, usually that test point is at the middle of the stick regardless of tapered shaft or not.

Only about 175 lbs (kinda big legs, ankles and wrists though), but with something like 77-80 flex, I feel a lag on my snapshots and almost out of control when I take a nice, fully loaded wrister. My problem is 100 works nice for me on power shots, but about 90 on wristers. I prefer 95 flex or so, but it's not commonly made.

all easton 100 flex sticks now are in fact made to 95 flex at full standard length. you have to cut them down 3" to get them to 100flex

I would love experimenting with different flexes to perfect my shot, however.... I can't justify spending over $100 on a stick/shaft and finding out that I really don't like that particular flex. An Easton 85 shaft, cut about 2 inches, is what I am using in a 2 pc set-up, and it seems to be working fine. In fact, 3 weeks in using this stick, and I am starting to appreciate how it works. I would love to try out a whippier as well as a stiffer shaft, but unless it was on a trial basis and I found out that I like it, I am in no position to do that. I know how to shoot, so it's just perfecting it with the perfect flex.

I've bought most of my sticks on Ebay for about 13-17% of what they're worth.

In my experimenting phase, I don't think I paid more than $50 for a shaft, bought a couple clearance wood blades at $10 a pop, and sold what I didn't like for pretty much what I paid for less shipping. That's the way to go.

Yeah I wanted to try a whip flex coming down from 90ish so I grabbed an old R2 shaft for $30. I like it a lot so now I might have some stiffer stuff to sell. Might even make some money off that decision

Anyone know off hand what the thickest Junior shaft is? I have been wanting to try a junior stick with a plug in it for a while now.

I guess having different diameters in my stick shafts doesn't effect me as much as you guys do. At first it does (like the first 5mins of a game) but after that I don't notice it.

You can always put a senior plug in it and just shave down the tapered part that goes into the top of the junior shaft.

Machinehead, you've made me feel like I'm not a freak for actually liking junior ultralites/z-bubbles, and I'm way small than you. 27 yrs. old, 5'7", 150lbs.

Though I recently picked up an int. (67) one95 ops, and it feels whippier than my jr. ultralites which are listed at 65-60. In fact, the ultralites feel like 70-75ish.

LoL. I'm glad there's at least another freak out there like me.

I'm also 27, just 5'9'' 220-230ish of spare tire. If i trimmed down to 190-200 i'd be closed to ripped. I weight about 150 in 8th grade LoL.

Sticks I currently have:

70 Flex Warrior Syko now with a very modified Amonte curve (more toe)

65 Flex Easton UltraLight no blade at the moment

50 Flex Eason Z-Bubble with a very modified Yzerman curve (more toe)

That's true, they're about 92 imo. My only complaint is Easton's sticks just don't last long enough for me to drop such $$$ in...

Holy crap! Do you take slappers at all?

I do probably once or twice a game. I even shoot one-timers, but my stick doesn't come past my hip when shooting one-timers or slappers.

There's no point in the windup coming above your waist no matter what.

I don't know how the hell you guys can aim with the junior sticks/low flex! More power to you for being able to do it!

I still can't decide what flex I like to use. I have a wide range of sticks and love using them all.

TPS XN10 Chrome - Afinigenov 95 flex

TPS Response C4 - Morrow Whip Flex

INNO Megalyte - Smyth 75 Flex (feels stiffer)

Warrior MacDaddy - Smyth 75 Flex

Warrior Dolomite Shaft - 280 Flex. I'm not really sure what this is as it's not listed on the flex chart, I figured it to be a 95 flex or so.

Ballistik 45cal - Sakic 90 Flex. Just got it in the mail today so I haven't used it yet.

The morrow is the odd curve of the bunch because I picked it up just to try a whip flex.

Its actually about an 85. When warrior flexes go up, they actually go down.... according to the chart at least.
