Pants built like tanks

Recommended Posts

Currently I wear an older pair of Graf 700s. If I fall on my butt or hip area, I will be unable to move. I'm looking for a pair that is built with lots of protection in the tailbone, hips, and thigh area. It would be great if they are on the shorter side. I'm a 5'5" female with a 29" inseam currently wearing a mens pant, unsure of size.

Tackla 5000 PRO NHL or RBK/CCM 520 rule in protection. Jofa/RBK 7000 are also very protective.

Not sure about retail pants.

I have tackla 9000 airs. Complete tanks. Any high end pant will really offer better protection then what your wearing however, i suggest getting out and picking what fits best. Tacklas are going to cost more but if you dont mind spending that much on pants, there worth it. I will not wear any other pant but tacklas, i tried out the vapor 40's, they were okay but nothing on tacklas in terms of mobility. Protection was around the same though.

I have Tackla 5000 Pros and also Graf G700's. I didn't think the protection was all that bad in the Grafs myself. In a tournament game not long ago I went after a defenseman at the point to block a shot and we collided pretty good. Both of us ended up on our backs. I got right up after a solid tailbone landing and was fine. I just wanted to try the 2 piece fitting ability of the Tacklas though so that's why I got them instead of a normal pant.

These would be my vote for most protective pant. The Tackla 9000's are decent, but a bit lacking in the tailbone area.

My older pair of Graf 700s are tanks. I'm confused by the lack of rear end protection unless they're a really old pair

Don't get Bauers. They have terrible tailbone protection. Warrior Hustlers are very protective, that's what I have. I don't think they're that great a pant for the $$ though. There are a lot of Tackla models you can get short or long. It will say -2 or +2. I'm also female, 5'7 125 lbs. 28 waist. I fall in the junior pant category but sometimes they are a little short depending on the brand. If you got a Junior large or XL the length would probably be good. I've heard Tackla and CCM Vectors are very protective. Hope that ramble helps.

if you are really bothered about the hip protection etc, then i would maybe consider wearing a small girdle under a pair of low protection pants with plenty of room. i currently wear easton stealth s9 pants and find them to be very protective in that area. there is alot of overlap in padding throughout and the mobility isnt sacrificed. i believe the s17 pants are just rebranded s9's maybe give them a look

Another vote for the CCM/RBK 520 series pants. If red is your color, I know where you can get a pair for $30 in size M or S.

Another vote for the Tackla 5000 or the 9000. Both have great hip and tailbone protection. Even the lower end tackla's have good protection if you want to save a little bit in the wallet.

On the warrior hustlers: I love mine- great mobility and comfort, nice protection- but the build quality is so so. Lot of stitches coming loose and the denier burns a little easily. Expensive pant for these issues to show up as early as they did.

It's too bad the hockey shop doesnt have those reebok NCAA pro return pants still. I absolutely love mine, I dont think those things have even let me have so much as a bruise since wearing them, and not a single tear or loose thread after ~5 months.

RBK 8K's , CCM V10's, Tackla 5000's/9000's, Easton S17's. Not necessarily in that order. All offer great pro level protection.

Just talked to my wife about her pants. She switched from an old pair of tacklas to a pair of TPS R6 female spec pants. you can really see the differances between her pants and a male pant. If your not playing contact hockey, maybe give these a look. She has had a few skate-over-head butt landings and so far so good. I think a lot of that also has to do with fittment. make sure the pants fit and stay in place as you move. no matter what pants you get will be worthless if the pads shift too much b/c they don't fit.

The fit would be completely different. If you're not a women, you should not be in women's pants. if you are a women, women's pants will fit you better.

And differences in protection would not be due to male/female differentiation. It would be due to the amount of protection in that model.

I am a female and you would think that female pants would be a good answer. I had a pair of tackla 880s that were women's pants but they didn't really work that well. I haven't had much luck with women's equipment, mainly because I can't try it on before hand since I live in Florida and only so many places have women's equipment. I will have to look into the TPS pants you mentioned.

I started a similar thread a couple of months back and in the end I was between RBK 8k's and CCM V08's due to the nice tailbone and hip protection. I ended up going with the V08's and am very happy with them. They really are like tanks and offer great lower back protection as well. I think the v10's would be even better. Also, I did a comparison between my V08's and my friends 7ks and the V08's were much more protective in my opinion. Hope that helps. Good luck!

we happened to find them not trying. Five-Hole sports in Raleigh, NC had them. Maybe give them a call. I know they ship stuff and te owner (andrew) is very cool and knows his stuff. He tries to keep these in stock b/c of the growing number of female players in the area. We drive 3.5 hrs to ge our stuff from him. Very nice guy.

How is the Tackla 951 Advantage compared? Seems like this model is only sold in Canada.

I tried on the 951's when I was shopping and I like the pants. I opted to get the 4400's, which are discontinued. If the 4400's weren't available, i would have bought the 951's Its got good protection in the hip area. It might be a little restrictive in the length of your stride.
