mxihockey 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2009 Ive been looking at buying my own skate sharpener for a while now, but have failed to come up with the money due to some other stuff that came up with hockey. I have absolutely no clue how to sharpen skates as of now. I found this old sharpener on craigslist thats only $100 and I'm thinking of buying it. It's all rusted up and some type of no name brand. Would this get the job done? How would I go about buying grinding wheels for it? Is it one size fits all? Thanks for any help."Silver-Flash Skate Sharpener produced by R. Murphy Co out of Ayer MA Older model skate sharpener. Works with no issues. Some surface rust."
DarkStar50 679 Report post Posted August 2, 2009 Seriously, hold on to your $100.For a buck, it might be something to play with but otherwise from the looks of it, that POS will be more trouble than it's worth.

Rustpot 1 Report post Posted August 4, 2009 All things considered, it probably will sharpen skates with a little TLC. I would probably not want to skate on the steel it touches, however. All the basic parts are there; the bed, skate clamp, and grinding wheel. You're going to be competing against two corroded metal surfaces that need to slide, stay perfectly parallel to each other and keep the correct distance from the wheel. Can that sharpener do it? Probably not. Plus you'd still need a wheel dresser of some kind, a few extra baubles like LOTS of grease, and a ventilation/vacuum setup.Between getting it ready, replacing or working on what needs it and the amount of steel you'll kill trying to correctly match technique to wheel speed and wear you're probably up to the cost of a basic unit. furlanitalia 1 Report post Posted August 4, 2009 Does it come with the tetanus shot, or do you have to buy that separately?
