Question about Custom Skates

Recommended Posts

I need a boot that would not have a high "ramp/arch" in the middle of the boot, so when i shop retail it keeps me away from things like one95's, 40's or Grafs. But everything else doesn't bother me so im sure if i got customs everything else would fit right.

So say i went with one of these skates could they change it so its alot flatter?

I don't think so. You may want to look at Eastons or possibly RBK or CCM (U+, not vectors).

You could also try different insoles. Superfeet can solve a lot of problems.

I tried RBK on but i like the look of Bauers and Grafs better so i was hoping they would just matchup the footbed like RBK. RBK's fit better but i still think customs would be best because i was still getting pain due to the width.

Superfeet make the problem worse

This could be part of your problem. Go with the boot that fits your foot. You won't be able to see them when you are palying anyway.

I couldnt agree more. I hated the looks of all the new skates. But the more conservative looking ones didnt fit. The s15's fit perfect for me....definitely not the most old school looking skate. But due to the feel and performance of a properly fitting skate, I couldnt be more pleased.

Well thats why im leaning towards the RBK 9K's right now.

I am only considering the customs right now because my feet have stopped growing for awhile now so i am willing to pay to get customs that will last me a long time.

Custom's aren't going to last you any longer than a normal retail skate. The only real reason to get customs as a retail customer is if your feet are different sizes. I believe Chadd_ has said the same thing.

I dont agree with you.My custom s15 with pro package have more then 250 game and another 200 practice and still going strong. Not sure normal S15 would be the same.

Couldn't agree more with eric, I walked into the lhs, hoping to get something plain, looking at the one95's or Grafs, a classic looking skate. Left with a pair of S17s that, although didn't look classic, after baking and some working in, fit like a glove.

Yeah, but hes not going to outgrow them. Pro stitched double stiff's will hold up longer, people with custom synergys and eastons say they last twice as long. Im going custom when my 9k's are done as well.

Yeah thanks The Dangler i was beginning to think no one was getting my point.

I am not expecting to get long durability (but like Eric said it is possible), because these are skates that could last me a few years; i mean my grafs i have had for 4 season now and they are still really strong. So if i could get a 4-5 years out of customs and they fit really good and have different mods, i think its well worth the price.

Also im not saying i wouldn't get RBK's im just saying if its possible for Bauer or Graf to change their footbeds in a custom skate to be flatter I would much rather prefer that, thus im curious if its possible.

You can get custom skates yes, people are stupid. If you get custom skates but cant change the fit on them then whats custom about them? I say get ahold of a graf rep and see what they can do for fitting customization and try bauer too, havn't heard of anyone i know getting ccm/rbk's done though. I would go the bauer route though honestly, quite a few people have before.

Getting custom footbeds could really help you out. Its around $100-$150 for the molded beds, but I felt like they made a huge difference in the comfort of my One95s. The arches on my feet are different heights so I always seemed to have problems with skates. The custom footbeds solved my problem completely.

Are you talking about just the footbeds?

Ive tried all types all didn't work, they help but don't eliminate the problem.

I forget what the brand name is...I'm sure there's more than one type...but they work in a similar way as baking skates. They are hard footbeds that are baked...then they are placed on an air bladder and you step on them...the air bladder forces them upward and they mold perfectly to the shape of your foot and harden that way.

Call around to a couple LHS and depending on where your located someone might have the machine and such.

I did and it cost me $600, the ones i got are only made to fit completely flat skate bottoms. Well as we know every skate has some sort of arch. I put these in my grafs and it pushes my whole foot up across the middle.

Probably the biggest waste of money i ever spent.

Hence i should of just went and bought custom skates for that kind of money.

Did the podiatrist make the orthotics off of your skates?

Sounds like that's the problem right there.

I brought him my skates, he fitted them and everything said they will work. He claims he did alot of the Vancouver Giants skates etc and never had a problem. Problem is he never took the mold from the bottom of the skate, i expressed my concern to him that i think it would push my foot up he says it won't be a problem.

Well everything went through and what i said happened.

He said there must be something wrong with my skate because they aren't suppose to be arched like that, they should be flat.

I'll just hit the high points:

1. A large percentage of pros get retail stiffness

2. A skate that is too stiff is not good for your stride

3. You are more likely to injure your knee or groin with a stiff skate

4. By the time you finally break the skate in, if ever, you will be used to skating in a ski boot and will not be comfortable skating in a softer boot and you will have lost ankle strength making it more likely that you will injure yourself there

5. Getting double the lifespan out of a synergy simply means it may actually last through an entire season of semi-competitive hockey

Long story short, getting extra stiff skates so they last longer is a really bad idea.

Well if the orthotics work, if you decide to go custom they can make the skate with the orthotic.

Yeah that will be the eventual plan.

So what you are saying is Bauer (lets say) can make the one95's to work with my orthotics? Because if i stuck these in a retail one95 it would hurt just as much as my grafs, so they would have to make the arch/ramp alot less.

I really just needs to talk to Bauer, Graf or RBK Canada reps personally to ask them these questions before i proceed to a specific skate. Can you do this or can you only talk to them if your LHS contacts them because i can't find contact #'s.
