Drop in cut offs

Recommended Posts

I wish we had cut-offs... sometimes in the summer we'll play 5v5 with 10-12 subs apiece and 4 goalies.

Same. In about a month there will be 5 guys waiting against the boards because the benches are full.

Where I used to play was 20 skaters, 3 tenders. Guys could call in and reserve a spot starting that a.m. if they had purchased a punch pass. I thought that system was great. It worked well for the regulars. No cutoff where I play now, but there doesn't need to be one.

That's pretty much where it's been the last few weeks. Today we were going 5 on 5 with 15 guys on each bench and there were 5 goalies. I know the kids are going back to school after next week, but it's a real pain in the ass. Tends to create the bipolar skates on Friday nights as well. You'll have packed weeks followed by everyone getting pissed and not showing up the next week so you end up going 3 on 3 shooting posts. I get they want to make money, and I'm not opposed to it. But customer statisifaction is a big part of repeat business and it's better to have a consistant turn out then a few months of packed ice followed by empty ice.

I can't believe rinks operate without cut offs. When it's filled up at 30, the amount of time you spend on the ice vs. on the bench is almost not worth it.

Were I play we have it set at 20.

Some days of the week if you don't call and get on the list within 15 minutes of when they begin taking calls there's no way you will get on.

I usually play my pick up at community rinks. The price is only $4.55, so it gets packed. The cutoff is 30 guys which is way too many.

Depends on who is running the rink that night. I hate when they keep letting people come in. 25 is the max I want to play with, that way I actually get ice time.

We don't have any cut offs. But we don't really need to.

At other rinks in the area there really should be cut offs...or someone to lay down the law on the guys that stay out for five minutes at a time. 25 guys all staying on for horribly long shifts kills a drop in fast.

its a plaugue at my normal skate, cap at 30 and iron lung junior b and college kids play 15-20 minute shifts. 10 bucks for 3 shifts isnt worth it. all my shifts arent worth $3.33

LOL, I encounter the same BS at my rink. The iron lung teenagers take those long shifts it is so frustrating! Even though people shout "change it up" from the bench. No one really has the balls to challenge these losers face to face and tell them that their shifts are too long.

It depends on the 30. You get guys running fairly short shifts and keeping things moving, 30 is actually a pretty good number. If you have the guys that have to skate a minimum 10 minute shift, things go to shit pretty quickly. On the rare instances that I show up anymore, I come at the last minute and see how many people are there before I pay.

The rink I work at when at home (the only one in town- one problem with the south), has a cap at 26 skaters and 4 goalies. Once when I was working we had all four goalie spots filled up 2 and a half hours before hand, when a 5th guy came in an hour beforehand he really wanted to play so I told him to clear it with all the other goalies first.

As a skater, 26 seems like too many. Everybody feels threatened by the number, so everyone stays out for a while. 20 seems to be perfect in terms of time and balance.

My rule is that I take a shift roughly equivalent to the guy who came off for me. While I support shorter shifts, I have the lungs to play long and will if that's what it takes to get icetime.

Yea, that's the problem, it just depends on the rink/game how people tend to play...if I'm paying $10 for 70 minutes of pickup, I'm going to make sure I get my fair share of ice, even if that means taking long shifts like everyone else. Then the people who really get pissed are the guys who are older or out of shape and can't possibly take those long shifts, so they get screwed. The rinks where I'm located tend to get filled with overzealous long-shifters, but I've played at other rinks where the players are still very good, though they take short shifts and are more relaxed about pickup. This is what I would prefer.

This has worked for me, but lately I've noticed we start with a good number of skaters. Then the late arrivers start streaming in so it's usually 30-40 minutes in that the number of skaters has swelled to the absurd.

hahaha. so true. last two times i went, the goalie bailed less than half way into it, AND we had a handful of guys dogging it for 7-10 minutes per. and of course, you get the guy who barely ever gets out on the ice (and it shows), so he's running guys, trash talking and hacking at the goalie.

i've actually started to prefer stick and puck, so i can do my own thing.
