Sold a roll of tape to...

Recommended Posts

Brendan Shanahan tonight before his son's Mite practice. This was the first time I had seen him in the building. Nobody knew that his boy was on the team. The second I saw him, I knew who it was. I walked up said, "Hey Brendan, what do you need?" as if I had been helping him for years! He just asked for a roll of tape and said, "I have about 100 rolls of this stuff at home!" He was plenty tall at 6'2" and his forearms were ripped. I wouldn't mess with him! He was great with everyone around the building signing autographs.

had a chance encounter with him and his wife in restruant here in det after their twins were born. we had just had our son about 5 months eariler. our wives starting talking about the babies and what they were in for. brendan and i talked hockey. and before we knew it they moved over to our table and had dinner with us. he even picked up the bill but i insteaded on taking care of the tip. he asked if we would like to come to a game that season. i said yes and he gave me number to call to get tickets. i ended up at the joe about 2hours before game time and had dinner in the olympic club. within about 20 mins he came over to me and asked if everything was good. i said yes. i agree with darkstar that he is exteremly friendly and outgoing to the fans of the game that runs into. waht a class act, i miss having him in det. hopefully soon he'll be running the nhlpa.

through my dad i have met many pro baseball players and a few nbs and nfl players. but hockey players always seem to be the most friendly. maybe its rooted deeply in the game or just that hockey players seem to get the fact that without the fans there would be no game.

Given our location (5 mins away from West Edmonton Mall) I've had a handful of former NHL'ers come to the store while the Brick Super Novice Tournament goes on every summer. A lot of the teams participating feature former NHL'ers' kids, and a lot of them end up in the big leagues someday...

I had a nice chat with John Maclean this year...he was coaching the team from Connecticut. Ditto for Matthew Barnaby who was coaching the team two years ago. Both of them were humble, low-key and easy to talk to.

Tough guy Steve MacIntyre came in the store last year while recovering from a broken orbital bone. Big dude, that guy... :)

Wow should change the name of the thread to " the good in the NHL players thats out there"

This summer I worked with 20 or so guys and all were just fantastic.

I was told the lockeroom talk was they wanted me back next year to do the skates for there Pro Skates thay have so that made me feel pretty good. Not to mention I can do butterfly's if a guy gets stick in the face that helps. (happens to the same guy every year and did again this year last skate of the summer for 5).

Anyway have a awesome story about one guy.

I get a phone call one hectic morning about 10 am from David Clarkson "Pottsy were the heck is the Hockey store near such and such a street." I am like trying to think ummm were are you now?? he was right down the road. I said why you going there?

So he tells me the story short version. " New Jersey called me yesterday my e-mail wasnt working this little guy Atom Player I think needed help picking out a new stick and he is one of my biggest fans so I said I would meet him to pick it out and I am late I cant find the store." Ohh well thats awfully nice of you.... " I was always told you have to give back so I do what I can" I am like dude your not far go up here and make a left at that light and in the parking lot.

let me know if it works out as it was one of our affiliated stores. "Ok thanks Pottsy thats awesome I will talk to you later."

Not only did he do that this summer he also did a Helmet fitting Video that will be on the TSN website coming up October 1st.

Just some super classy guys that play and have played!

We need more of these stories in the news!!!!

Hockey players are the best!

Played in a 24-hr charity event a month ago and Rick Middleton and Lyndon Byers played with us. Before the first shift, one of the youngsters turns to Middleton on the bench, oblivious to who he was and asks him, "So do you play fwd or D?" We all broke out in a huge laugh. Nifty was so cool, simply replied..." I play fwd".

Exactly what my orthopedic doctor told me after he had worked with NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL players. NHL players were always friendly and humbling to his help.

lol

I guess he was doing the Metro rink tour. He was here yesterday skating with a friend of mine. Shanahan is an awesome guy. I've met him once before yesterday and he's real personable and honest. Talked about wearing the visor a bit. Glad he's back with the Devils

Last night I randomly sold some tape to Bryan Berard before he skated with some friends.

You obviously didn't get the joke, or know that most professional athletes would've expected the roll of tape at no charge...

moving on...

Pretty sure he can afford it.

*checks*

$56,615,000 in career earnings as of 2007.

3.3 million since.

Yup, he can afford a roll of tape.

I know that he would get it for free from a team. However, looking at his earnings, he probably wouldn't care if he did have to buy it.

Also, the joke doesn't work at all unless they have a reputation as a diva. For many professional athletes it works. For Shanahan in a thread where he's being praised as a really nice guy, it doesn't work nearly as well.
