FBV: Frustrated!

Recommended Posts

So after years and years of good Maximum Edge sharpening, I decided to bite the bullet and try something new, I went to Brian's and got the Flat Bottom V done on my skates.. 2 questions he asked me, do I want to feel it immediately or after 3 skates, (having no clue what he asked, I chose the later) .. it's only been 2 skates but I can't seem to stop correctly (feels like when I stop I just want to topple over) which is creating all sorts of problems for me! Even sharp turns are harder then they used to be. So my question is: Is it just a matter of getting used to this unique design? Should I just go back to M-E and get them done again? Or are they done wrong? I'm sharpening - illiterate!!! Any suggestions greatly appreciated ;)

Others with more technical knowledge than I will chime in I'm sure, but it took awhile for me to get "dialed in" to the right FBV spinner. I was on traditional 9/16 before I switched over to FBV. First I tried 100/75...too sharp, then 90/75...not sharp enough, finally was able to try 100/50...Bingo!

Missconduct,

A couple of ideas:

First: What ROH were skating on previously?

Second: What FBV did you try?

I have found with both myskates and my son's that if want the edges to feel the same as you were skating on before, you need to use a shallower FBV than the sharpeners says is "equivalent".

For example, I used to skate on 3/4" traditonal. At first I tried 90/75 and like it very much. Then I tried 90/50 and all I can say is WOW! lenty of edge and an absolutely ridiculous amount of glide.

FBV is different, and takes a little getting used to, but I highly recommend that you stick with it...I will NEVER go back to traditional sharpening.

Wow, what are the odds, i'm having problems this morning as well. I just got my vapor 60s and I switched the stock LS2 steel out for stepsteel velocity steel and got my usual 100/50. Had my first skate this morning and could not stop for my life, didn't realize it so the first time I tried to stop, smashed into the boards. before my 60s I was on Easton s15s with LS2 holders and LS2.1 steel and i was using 100/50 and loved it. Now with my 60s and my stepsteel getting 100/50 is a nightmare. What should i do, should i just go to a different cut, or just put the stock LS2 steel back on? I was told that the stepsteel velocity holds a better edge and whatnot but i didn't think my feet would be stuck to the ice. because it really feels like crap right now. I have a game sunday night and need to get this dialed in. Please help!

When I was on me s15 i never got my skates profiled, I'm just so surprised of the difference going from the 2.1 LS2 steels to the Velocity, it felt like I was learning to skate all over again

It sounds to me like he gave you too deep of a hollow. As for his question, I don't understand what he was getting at since your skates should feel perfect right after a sharpening and not after you've dulled the edges from a few skates on them.

LS2.1 and Velocity aren't the same radius, that's your problem.

Mich - what were you getting at M-E and what FBV did you get? You need to ask questions, girl!

JR, so what would you recommand me doing so that i can get the same feeling as when I was on the LS2.1 and should I go to a less deep cut? Also with my s15 before the LS2.1 steel I was on just the normal LS2 steel. Please help me out and I'll go try it today

Sorry guys, I'm not too knowledgable about getting skates profiled and what not, so please bare with me. So should i just take the skates back to the shop and tell them to put the same radius that was on the LS2.1 on the velocity?

Maximum Edge was sharpening at 5/8's

Brians sharpened them at 80/75

sorry JR, never had any problems before - ill ask more next time :P

I skated at 5/8 on the 'old' way.

FBV - 90/75

So Matt, you think I need them done at 90/75 or just need a few more games? I play tonight and tomorrow night..

My hollow of choice was 3/4" so I originally was on 90/75 which was originally an estimated 3/4", I told JR that I thought it felt like 5/8' after the first ice time. That being said, it gives you different feel/feedback on the ice. I was rather uncomfortable on a 5/8" hollow but I liked the 90/75 feel. Try some other FBVs if you're still having trouble adjusting and you'll figure out what you like best, it's a trial and error process.

I'd stay on 90/75 for a bit, see if you can adjust. If you can't adjust to 90/75, try 90/50. It's a trial and error process but it's worth the initial trouble, if you're unlucky enough to have trouble. :)

I was told that 90/75 was the best option for someone starting out on FBV from 5/8. It's not like you are at total opposite ends of the range. It might not hurt to get them re-done if you really aren't comfortable on your skates.

I felt the same way, I tried the FBV this past monday just for fun and as I type this now am icing my ribs from trying to turn tight and falling hard onto the ice and sliding right into the boards with my elbow coming hard into the side of my body. I'm just going to stick with my M-E sharpening from now on.

JR, before I got my 60s I was on easton s15s with tuuk LS2 and and LS2.1 steel, the guy at my LSH told me that it gave me more of a neutral stand and the stepsteel velocity is a 10' radius so it pitched me forward which caused my problems, is this true?

A good starting point for the FVB would be 90/75. My feel is that you were put right on 100/75 FBV which might be be too much for most of players. I'd go back and ask for 90/75. It would take a little bit of getting used to. Just a little bit. If 90/75 won't give you enough bite (which I doubt), go up one level and have them do 100/50. You'll be fine, trust me. Actually more than fine. NONE of my customers went back to traditional sharpening after having played on the FBV. Mind you, I don't do profiling. New out of box skates or used ones - none of the customers went back to traditional ROH.
