New Skates

Recommended Posts

I'm currently looking for new skates. Some background: I only skate once per week. Currently I have Vectors which I absolutely hate. They rub my ankle and I get a blister type sore almost every time I wear them. I've played hockey all my life and can skate pretty decently (or I could). I've had 5 pairs of tacks growing up, one pair of bauer air 90's, a pair of nike accel's, a pair manny malhotra pro return tacks (like 10 years ago), and these most recent vectors which I can't stand.

My feet are pretty normal although my left foot is almost flat and is half a size bigger apparently and my right foot has a normal arch. Yesterday I tried on Vapor 40's and they seemed fine at first until I walked around and my heel was lifting and there was pressure on my small toe on the toe cap. The guy at the shop told me to stay away from flexlite's because my foot doesn't have much volume and it's not a great skate for the price anyways. He said if I don't like vectors not to try the new ccm's and basically said I need to go for Supremes. He's bringing in a pair of 75's for me to try on, but he made it sound like that is my only choice at this point. He thought my feet would fit vapours cause they look pretty boxy but when I tried them on it seems like my foot is more of a "V" which he said is how the supremes fit.

Any feedback for me on what I should be looking at here? Are supremes my only option?

With a half size difference between two feet, you will probalby have to go custom. At that point it may not matter what skates you get, the customs will fit.

Well like I said I play once per week, I can't justify spending that much on hockey skates (I need new golf clubs too lol). I'm more looking for opinions in respect of my foot shape rather than length.

I currently wear 8.5D ccm's. Right foot could probably squeeze in to an 8.25 or 8. I think the difference in size is closer to a quarter size, rather than a full half.

Again, I think I've overemphasized the sizing. I'm more worried about the fit and my heel popping out in the vapors. I can live with the length being a bit off on one foot as I've never noticed it for my first 20 years in skates. I'm hoping to spend about $300-$400 CAD on a mid-range skate.

I only bring this up because I was at my LHS yesterday and saw that they had 07' RBK 9k's for like 399.99 because he only had one size left. BUT, they offer you the ability to pump the heel lock padding up? Would the 5k's or 9k's be an option?

The RBKs can pump the padding up, but it's still quite wide.

Without knowing the shape of your forefoot I can't be sure, normal isn't enough to go on BTW- everybody seems to consider their foot normal, and there are always vast differences, but thinking heel lock I think U+ (different then older vectors), and Eastons. If it's only a quarter size difference then yeah, probalby not such a big deal. I don't really ever think bauer for great heel lock though, I would look into other brands.

As for the arch, no matter what skate you get you should look into an orthotic.

I asked about RBK's and the guy basically talked me out of them. He said the only people who buy them at the shop are WHL (Giants) guys cause they're the only skates all the players get free (not sure if this is true). The 5k's which are in my price range are heavy as hell, and the 9k's are out of my price range unfortunately.

Is the fit on the U skates different from the Vectors?

$400 dollar 9ks from 2007? wow. you could easily talk them down to $250 CAD. I don't think anyone has 2007 9ks left, and if they do, they should get rid of them for whatever they can get. Talk to their manager to bring price down to about 250ish.

as for that being true, it is, in a way. USHL i know gets everything RBK/CCM for free. I think CHL is sponsored by RBK/CCM as well. But quite a few people wear 9ks, kids, juniors, adults. Don't get U+. The U+ 07 2009 skate would probably be a great skate for you. Very comfortable and the price is a steal for what you get. What vector skate do you have? there are like 7 different models. Its like saying you have an Easton stick. COuld be a POS a great stick, model number helps ALOT.

The only place around here that has XXV is Sportchek, which is kind of like buying skates at Walmart. And they're $299, which is like paying for porn...I mean I could, but I have Utorrent, you know what I mean?

Come on someone, give me the magical potion. Give me the fucking sex skates I need to score goals.

i think someone might need to get laid....but anyways the xxv's are very good skates. very close to the xxxx's. but we have similair feet i think and the one75's fit my feet very well. think they could be the "sex skates" your lookin for. either way goodluck

I beg to differ. I've picked up some real good top end stuff at Sports Chek at really incredibly discounted prices. I think it's a fantastic place to shop for some decent hockey equipment. Wal-Mart however that's another story and I won't go there!

Even less should still have you considering customs. I have a 1/4" difference...plus a C narrow foot. What most will find is that a well-qualified person who knows how to measure your foot would be able to assist. In other cases, I find it better to go to a quality shoe store to learn more about the nuances of your foot.

When JR measured my feet, there were some things I was prepared to hear because of having to deal with issues with shoes. I have no real skate experts locally, so the shoe store was the best place to get information.

lol for the 5th time. Customs are not an option. I play one time per week and am not spending that kind of money on skates.

I guess I'll try the supreme 70's on. Although the guy said that the bauer branded ones (same skate) will be coming in soon and they aren't ordering anymore of the NB branded ones so the only size I can try is a 9D which he's bringing in from another location. I guess I'll see if they fit.

How do the supreme 50's compare to the 70's in terms of construction & quality? I'd prefer to spend less than $499 if possible.

they shouldn't be able to order anymore NB branded skates or equipment. considering NB isn't in the game anymore.

They could order some of the backstock, if they have any. Another reason they won't order and NikeBauer branded ones is the price drop that will take a hit once they complete phase out the NB logo.
