Wrong size skates?

Recommended Posts

This may be a dumb question but I recently purchased a pair of ice skates that I don't think fit properly. When I skate I get an incredible amount of pain in my arches. When I bought them I thought they fit well but I am not so sure now. I only have about 4 hours of ice time on them but I dont want to use them cause I may end up selling them, but at the same time I am not sure about it. From reading other posts it seems you should have your toes feather the end of the boot and they dont do that. At the same time I feel like my heel isnt sitting back properly. I am not really sure what to do at this point and am just wondering where to go from here. Ill post a few pics of where I think the problems are when I get my camera charged.

Do you have a high, normal, or flat arch?

Maybe a different insole (e.g. Superfeet) would help?

Maybe the skate is too narrow?

You could try lacing less tightly around the arch, too.

I'm not really sure what kind of arch I have. I assume is a normal arch. I have not tried a different insole because the heat molding should have made it form fit if Im not mistaken. The skate is pretty tight but I assume it is supposed to be that way. I think I made the mistake of going bigger instead of going wider. The skates are CCM U+ 09s.

It could likely be that the skate isn't deep enough for your foot, or the model of skate has arches that are too high for your feet. Also, Like ktang said the skates could also be too narrow. There are many different reasons for arch pain in skates. What brand/ model skate is it?

If your heel isn't all the way back and your toes aren't all the way in the front at the same time, you have issues. I suspect that the skate is indeed too big.

Sounds like he may have the completely wrong size.

Actually, simple test. Unlace the skates, and shove your foot as far forward as it'll go. If you can stick more then one or two fingers behind there, it's the wrong size.

Seems like the case as I can practically fit my whole hand down there. On another note here are the feet pics. Any comments/recommendations would be greatly welcomed as well as a good place in the Pittsburgh Area to get fitted. I'd be willing to drive pretty far though and make a day out of it to get a properly fit skate though. The skates I currently have are CCM u+ 09 size 8d if you guys want to make fun of me or whatever. I swear they fit fine in the store though. Maybe I'm just clueless.

heat molding doesnt affect the arch support. if your arches are aching, try an insole. if you have the extra cake, i'd go custom

That's probably really unnecessary. He just has a skate way larger then he should. The arches are probably just hitting in the wrong place.

The probalby sit 'fine' in the store because you're used to shoes fitting loose, like most Americans. The room in there leads to nothing pressing, which makes you think they're really great and comfy.

You need to get fit properly. You very well may need to go wider, and you very well may need to try a different skate and manufacturer.

ya dude. pretty big gap there. the tips of my toes just go over the end of my footbeds. think you need to downsize for sure. whats your shoe size and skate size?

Size depends on a few things. Sneakers size 10 or 10 1/2, running shoe 9 or 9 1/2, dress shoe 10. It all depends on the company I guess.

I do have the money for custom insoles but I'd rather spend it on new skates if thats the best route, which it seems like it is.

Any suggestions on manufacturers I should look at? I really want to avoid Reebok because I hate the pump. I guess I went in thinking in the back of my head that I wanted CCM skates and come hell or high water that is what I was going to get. Clearly a rookie mistake.

Your foot looks pretty 'normal' except for the flat arch, and those can be different, some are quite stiff, some need a little extra support and would work well in a boot with more arch... Honestly I think the best thing for you is to get in and start from scratch. Get to a store with a lot of stock and start trying stuff on. Nail down the length first and then figure out if it works for you or not. You should be able to just brush your toes against the toecap, and your heel should be locked down tight. Then lace them up and give them a feel. Stand up on them and check the arch. Pay attention to the width. I don't think you'll have too many issues in that department, you look like a pretty solid D width. Individual skates will vary, of course.

And remember that there's only so much baking can do. If they don't fit pretty well before you bake them, they're not going to magically transform.

As for good shops in the Pittsburgh area, others would be able to help you far better then I.

Assuming your heel is placed properly on the insole; Down a full size and a wider fit, then maybe insoles for any arch issues that are left over.
