Recommendation for shinpads

Recommended Posts

Looking for a bit of advice on new shinpads...

I'm looking for a pair that I fit OVER my skates (Bauer Vapor XX), so I need a pair with a wide bottom. I'm a tall, skinny guy (need 16" or 17" pads) so it would be nice if the rest of the shinpad wasn't super-wide so I can get a snug fit.

I checked out the new Bauer One75s, and they seemed to be wider than older Bauer products, but I'm still not sure if they are wide enough to fit over the skate properly (interesting sidenote: It looks like all of the pads are made from the same basic shinpad, and they just cut them higher for the shorter lengths. As a result, a 16" pad will be narrower at the bottom than a 14" pad). But at least they were nice and snug throughout the shin.

I also checked out the CCM 06 and 08 series, which are by far the widest at the bottom. They weren't too bad around the shin, but it would be nice if I could find a snugger pair. So far, they are my winner, but I thought I would ask around for other suggestions.

Also, what do you guys do with the top part of the pad (tongue)? I always find that the new pads tend to get caught in my pants when I hop over the bench. I've heard that some people just cut them off, but the nice part about my old pair is that the tongue is long enough that it manages to stay down when I hop over.

Thanks. :)

Your pants should go down to the middle of your knee while standing. Being tall it may be tougher to get the pants to do that. That could be part of your problem. I've seen people who have had the same problem. Also some of the pants that have a slimmer cut like the NBH XXXX lite may make that worse. I have the NBH XXXX lite & I had that problem until I adjusted my shins.

A lot of people cut that piece off. For the most part your pants cover that spot so there isn't any risk to cutting it off.

I'm not quite as tall but skinny. I have used 15" RBK for some years now, and they work well over my skates. I would check them out. All the RBK styles use the same exterior plastic, so picking a model just amounts to picking how much $$ you want to spend for fancier padding etc.

Yep, cut 'em. I used a little dab of superglue on each end of the edge trim stitching to make sure it doesn't pull loose. Works like a charm.

I have skinny legs as well so I used to use bauer's becuse of that, Vapor xxxx's. Switched from 14 to 15 and wanted to try another brand. Reebok 10k's, more protective, wider fit over skates, not as ventalatied. But a better shin IMO. I had to cut straps down and sew velcro on again to get snug fit but now there perfect. Dont even need tape

The 9K's shown were a bit wide in the knee cap for me. I took a hair dryer and heated them up slightly and then clamped them down for a couple days to narrow things up gently. Worked like a charm!

With my skinny legs, I think my next set will be Vapor's of some type, probably not 40s, but something in the vapor line. Seems that from what I've read on here these would fit me best.

for a snug pad Vapor XXXX's but I have taken a good wrist shot and wow did it hurt (bone bruise has been there for 5 weeks now)

I would recommend rbk 9K cheap and bulky but comfortable and they are absolute tanks

First off, thanks to all for the great info. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this sort of issue. I'm probably going to get the CCMs or the RBKs...just have to find the size in stock (I think I need 17" in RBK/CCM) and a sale .

I'm just curious: When I bought my pants (about 10 years now, I think), I had the option to make them longer (right from the manufacturer - VIC). Are there any brands that still offer that now? I think I'll have to get new pants in the near future too.

Thanks.

Tackla 9000 has a +2" option, and Warrior Hustler customs have a +1" and a +2" option.

I just picked up the Bauer One75 shin guards. Very nice shin guard. I am 6' 1" with skinny legs and had to get 17". They were easily able to fit over the tongue of my skates. It's a very well made shin guard. When you use 17" pads it's hard to find your size at the LHS. Rebook 4k and 5K are good but I find them to be bulky.
