phunky_monkey 6 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Hey all, I'm looking for a new standard shaft and was hoping someone in the know might be able to help me with a small comparison. I currently have an SE16 and really enjoy the shape of the shaft, and all of my current sticks are Eastons and have been for years. I tried a Dolo tapered shaft out last year and hated it, but I'm not 100% whether that was due to the shaft or the blade, but I do know that it was uncomfortable in my hands. So my question is, has anybody used an SE16 and any of the following shafts: AK27/One95/Ballistik 52 cal/S15 and can give me a comparison as to the feel of the stick and shape of it's shaft?Cheers,Dane
Hockeyman11385 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 I have owned the old AK, the one95, and the S15 and the S15 felt the biggest and had the most squared off corners. The one95 feels (my current stick) slightly smaller with more rounded corners and finally the AK27 felt the smallest with the most rounded shape. I do not have extensive experience with the SE but have picked up a few and from what I can remember the SE felt slightly bigger than the one95. I would say more like the S15 with more rounded corners.
zacharius 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 i have used an se16, and didnt like it too much. felt too boxy in my hands, and i loveeeeed my one95. it feels great seems a little less boxy, but i just loved the stick overall. havent used any of the other sticks, but isnt an s15 just an s17 shaft? if so, im currently using two s17's and they feel quite similar to my one95s in my opinion, a little more rounded on the corners
Hockeyman11385 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 From my experience the S15 is way more boxy than the S17.Personally I love the one95 and don't see myself switching to anything else anytime soon. My dad and brother have the 2 piece and rave about it and there's lots other good reviews on here.
phunky_monkey 6 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Thanks guys.I've got a few S11's as well, so I dare say they'd feel similar to the S17. I like that shape too, just not quite as much as the SE but it's definitely fine for me. From what you're saying Hockeyman it would seem that the AK may be too thin for me. I think the problem with the dolo for me from memory was that it was boxy but thin, so it cut into my fingers a little bit. Is the AK more like a Johnston (have picked up one of those before and it's quite thin)? The one90's and one85's I've played around with have quite a nice shape, are they similar to the 95? Rustpot 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 AK and Dolo are the same pretty much. They're not thin so much as that slight concavity gives a smaller feel. I loved the AK's for the shot, but they torqued like mad and the shaft shape killed them for me. Same with the Dolo, minus the torque. The 52cal is a very boxy shaft, at least the one I had was, not sure if they changed anything. The S17 to me felt very similar to the SE sticks. Not exactly the same, but pretty close. That kevlar weave that leaves the shaft with a slightly bumpy texture is something I like. If the S15 is like a Zbubble it should be pretty similar if not the same as most of Easton's sticks.Bauer shafts feel funny to me. The Vapor line never felt right in the hands. The Supreme sticks from the One90 line were pretty square with heavy rounding. The One95 line is very similar, but the tactile zone beefs the corners a bit. Odd feel, and left the stick feeling thin in the middle of the shaft to me.You might want to also look at CCM/RBK shafts in the T shape. Very square, traditional (doi) shape.I've gone through quite a few sticks- XXXX, Mac Daddy, Dolomite, AK27, 52caliber, Fuel Ti, One90, One95, SL, SE, ST, S17, Sickick, 9k, Response Rubber, Response Lite, Montreal Nitros... probably a few more. I keep ending up going back to Easton. Once I got an Easton SL I've had an SL or SE in the stable that I rotate to more often than anything else.
cbart 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 The new Ballistik 52 calibre has rounded corners unlike previous year's model.....
phunky_monkey 6 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 The ones I'm most keen to try out is the Ballistik 52 cal, and the one95, but I have a feeling I will end up going back to the Easton like yourself Rustpot. I suppose there is a reason I own nothing but Eastons now! I'm just curious to try something else out to see how I like it, and have heard good things about AK's, but I'm a little turned off Warrior due to the Dolo I had... and I'm just not a big fan of the brand. At the end of the day I know it all comes down to PP but I'm hoping to pick up something I like enough to keep as getting rid of them here is tough. I'll check out the RBK/CCM lines too though, thanks.
fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 phunky, you should have just texted me... I've tried the SE16, AK27, Bal52Cal, and awaiting the One95The Bal52Cal has rounded edges, similar to the SE16 that you've currently got. I ddint really try the AK27 for very long, but it did feel a little more rounded. Get the 52 Cal, its a friggin nice stick.
Hockeyman11385 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 I would say the AK would be too thin if you didn't like the Dolo. I really like the one95 but I've only used Bauer's for a couple of years so I have some brand loyalty and love the feel of their sticks. The one95 is much lighter than the one90 and the shaft walls feel much thinner when you hold the stick. I really like having the tactile on just the corners, that's where I would have it if I had customs made for me.Looks like fatwabbit has all of the advice you need though since his experience with the sticks is more recent than mine. chippa13 1844 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 I would say if you're happy with the SE16 shape then don't mess with a good thing and get an SE16 tapered shaft if you're heart is set on a two-piece. I, too, find myself always gravitating back to Easton for my sticks although the One95 had a good run for me.
phunky_monkey 6 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Chippa: I've got an SE16 two piece already, just looking for a standard shaft which is why I want something similar, but can't get the same :)Kev: Cheers mate, didn't think of it! I'm most tempted by the 52 cal, just waiting for a shipping quote on one so hopefully they come to the party with a half decent price. My biggest issue has been finding one to try.Hockeyman: Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I think I'll try and track down a 52 Cal, and if that's not successful I'll give the one95 a go... will probably end up with an S15 at some point though :P

The feel of it is similar to the S17, but you can feel the puck on the blade as opposed to the Easton. You won't be disappointed with the Ballistiks.
phunky_monkey 6 Report post Posted October 7, 2009 Yeah I'm pretty interested to try one, hopefully the seller comes back to me overnight with some good shipping news.Edit: Seller didn't come back to me so I just picked up a One95. Thanks for the help all :)
