SLy MaLLone 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2004 I've been looking for a new computer, and I've decided to get a laptop, I want to know what you guys would recommend. I don't need the fastest, or the biggest screen or anything, I'm just looking for something that is decently fast, and works well overall. I'm looking to spend around $2,000. I'm open for all suggestions. Apples included.

SLy MaLLone 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 I'm in college, so pretty much school work, internet browsing, watching dvds. Nothing that will really test the hardware.

jay 1 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 I've had fewer problems with Toshiba than any other brand of laptop. I hope that's the case. The significant other just bought a Tosh Tablet PC and I'm nervous as heck about having problems with it. I would have preferred for her to spend the dough on a Mac but all her research software is PC only.

SLy MaLLone 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 Damn. sorry, I searched too, that thread didn't show up with the keyword "Laptop." I forgot to change the time span from 30 days.
Vapor 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 IBM T40 with intel centrino wireless. I use it for everything, its great. ok, I have to disagree. All "centrino" means is intel bundles its mobile processor (which is very good) with a subpar wireless card. I would just get a regular pentium m processor, and spend 50 bucks and get a better card. OR I would be a smart lil boy and buy a mac :).

This is my second laptop from Sager and I am happy to report, zero probs and great service!http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/noteboo...=4790&SubType=VMy only mod was moving up to an 80GB HD. SLy MaLLone 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 The Sager's look real nice, and they use a lot of Toshiba parts, we may have a winner.

Vapor 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 If your going to get a windows based noteb ook (:() Here are some companies I WOULDNT go with. Sony (expensive, terrible support, not worth it), Compaq (one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a notebook). I would either go with an IBM (best pc based notebooks out there, thinkpads rule, if your into that whole pc fad). Alienware (I know that they are gaming notebooks, but they do put out GREAT quality products, they are hot though). I wouldnt go dell or gateway. I had a toshiba, too clunky for me, and not that great of a pc for the money, in my opinion
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 IBM may be the most overpriced PC vendor in history.
SLy MaLLone 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'm gonna go with this one.
Vapor 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 IBM may be the most overpriced PC vendor in history. International Business Machines (ya see, when you use the whole name, it sounds cool) make solidly constructed notebooks, which have GREAT support, and are very slim. They are great computers, they may come with a nice price tag, but its worth it, I wouldnt want to pick up a shitty 1000 dell and have it crap out on me like this dell inspiron 4000 Im fixing right now for a teacher. This computer is laid out terribly, btw.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 The support was terrible, you had to install a number of thinkpad utility programs to make it work correctly and they ate up a ton of memory, parts were brutally expensive and they needed replacement parts far in excess of the industry norm.Of course I haven't had to deal with them for the last year or two do that may have improved. I had a couple of older Dell laptops that worked fairly well but the newer ones are a pain.

stevoc 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 agree with you Chadd. I find the Fujitsu Siemens computers (laptops) to be fairly good for their price. Toshiba too. I agree. We use ibm exclusively at my work and getting support isn't easy. And if you have removed any of the ibm tools and utilities, they will not take the machine back until you put them back on and try to fix the problem with them. Doesn't help much since we make a standardized image for our laptops, which doesn't include the cruddy tools. On toshiba: i purchased a toshiba satalite last year (1.2 GHz Celeron) and it was fairly slow. But I added another 256 RAM (bringing it to 512) and it runs just as fast as my 1.3 GHz PIII Gateway that has 1GB RAM. I'd stay away from celeron though....you'll notice huge difference between the celeron and pentium. Also, go for the P4, centrino is nice for power management, but tends to be slower in performance than the P4.
GekigangarIII 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 agree with you Chadd. I find the Fujitsu Siemens computers (laptops) to be fairly good for their price. Toshiba too. Oh my lands... not Fushitsu! I've never had more problems with laptops than I have with those POS. Toshiba has always made a nice laptop though. Chadd, as far as Thinkpads go, they've come a LONG way since the 600e days... I've had to use IBMs for a while (corporate thing) and the models of the last few years (T23 and up) have been really great machines. We have contracts with Fujitsu Toshiba and IBM and I go with the thinkpads.

It's nice to work where we have the capital to beat around companies like IBM... :) It is a shame though that other companies that don't have huge accounts don't get the same level of support.
