Owl City Rant

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I just need to go on a bit of a rant here. Owl City is identical to Postal Service/DCFC and Ben Gibbard. Why are they getting such huge fame* when they are ideally doing the exact same thing as what was done over a decade ago!

Not only are the voices identical, but the fireflies video is shot in the same style as we become silhouettes! The start is practically identical!

If someone could shed some more light on the situation that would be fantastic. The only reasoning I can have behind this is that it is a "feel good story" of some MySpace musician, and that's why he is doing so well.

*My definition of huge fame is just the fact that they are high on iTunes top 10's. I don't listen to music when I drive, just Hockey Central podcasts, so I'm not really sure what is on the airwaves.

Mainstream music is terrible. Its all generic and plain, no real new innovations in music within the past few years. Its all stuff 13-18 year old girls will love. Underground/non-mainstream music has much more detail and emotion.

All main-stream music starts as underground.

Obviously, but once something gets popular there are 100 other things out there that sound exactly like them. Ex. Nickelback and the other 20 bands that sound the same. Generally the stuff that isnt popular with 13-18 kids is not going to played on the new music radio stations.

There are 100 bands that sound like every other underground band already, you just don't know about them. Record companies sign them as soon as one of the bands breaks out into the mainstream as the chances of selling more records is significantly increased. Record companies have also figured out that they can still sell a lot of country, bubble gum pop and rap stuff, but rock bands tend to be pirated more often. That's why you see less and less rock, unless it can appeal to absolutely everyone and sell a crapload of records. Leading to bands like nickleback that follow a pretty strict formula for writing songs.

Well, it's the price of priacy. Everyone thought the guys from Metallica were such assholes when they went after Napster, but at this point I have to say they were right. Which is difficult because I think Lars Ulrich is a douche for other reasons, but that's neither here nor there. The record companies can't make money off of rock related genres, and they won't record it. It's killing everything that isn't pop-rock, pop, country, or rap. If you want that to change it's really pretty simple: next time you are on Limewire close the program and go buy the music on iTunes.

I think they only started getting attention was after the release of thier newest album. Its the same as their older works, which I thought was definately refreshing compared to the other Rock/Altern. I listen to
