I think because of the long, thin taper on the U+, you'd have to cut way up the shaft in order to fit a tapered blade in it. Your best bet is to either flip it and put a blade in the butt-end, or just get a new stick.

one of mine broke in a similar spot, you do have to cut pretty high up, but even with a 2.5"-3" plug it still makes a good tapered shaft. highly recommended.

Broke my U+ CL sunday night... It's still below the U on the bottom of the shaft, has anyone cut to put a tapered blade in... I am just curious where I should cut it

make your first cut right where the failure occurred and try it. if its too narrow, take another 3/4" - 1" off. if its too narrow still, work your way up by 1/2-3/4" until it fits. it may take a bit of elbow grease if you're using a hacksaw, but its worth it. as i mentioned before, it makes a great shaft.

Where about's in respect to the U did you end up stopping?

Good to know that the shaft can be re-used after the stick breaks. I always wondered if it could.

I suggest using a mitre saw over a hack saw though! Much faster, easier, and straighter ;)

People get too caught up with "where should I cut it"..............Shotty has the right idea. I just cut a little bit at a time until a blade fits. 3 for 3 so far :P

A general starting point is all I am looking for. So I'm not F-in around taking 1/4" off at a time...

I feel like what I am asking for is a very simple answer

Well, it's good to know. If people keep cutting until it fits, one may have to cut it too much and will make the shaft too short to use. If one knows that you'll have to cut the shaft a certain length, he can decide whether or not to cut it or flip the shaft.

if you're a dumbass with a saw, you'll cut too much off.

remember: you're trying to SALVAGE something. it's a bit of an art. you need patience.

kress, i already told you what to do. if you don't want to take the advice, throw that broken thing in the trash and go buy a new one. making former OPS' into shafts is EXACTLY what you would call "f-in around"

of course. majority of people don't have one though.

if you really want to get creative, measure the height of the blade you're putting in, minus the length of the tenon, add in the number of inches your shaft would need to be in order to make it your ideal length and mark your cut. if it looks like it'll take too much off the taper, take some off the top. if its too short, add a plug.

He doesnt't get it...........It's not hard and doesn't take that much time. You don't need to go in quarter in increments......... Just take the extra time to make a few more cuts................It doesn't take a genius to eyeball where to make the first cut........I did my first conversion in 1 cut, the second in 2 and the third in 3 cuts.........

Alright,

Apparently you two don't understand what I am saying, which I didn't think was very difficult.. so I'm not sure who the idiot is but...

Shaft

Broken===U=========================================Butt End

WHERE DID YOU CUT IT?

1. BEFORE THE U

2. ON THE U

Pretty simple answer...

hey. i know BOTH exactly what you're saying AND who the idiot is.

now, go ask your daddy for permission to use his hacksaw, and get to work. be sure to use work gloves and safety goggles.

you're exactly right, it doesnt NEED to be 1/4" increments, but when i do it i am for balance of perfect fit and ideal length. i usually get it in 2-3 cuts. it takes me more time to prep the stick for cutting than it does to actually make the two to three cuts.
