Anyone ever wonder what's under the paint on a carbster?

Man it's been a long time since I've posted on here! Well I was a bit bored so I started taking the finish off my carbster. I think it looks pretty intense without paint. I'll never stop wearing this helmet!!!

I guess you are not worried about the safety of the helmet?

Looks like all he removed was a layer of paint and primer. Neither of which will hurt the integrity of the helmet. The shell appears to be a Kevlar/carbon fiber composite mix. The only way you'd hurt that is if you used a strong solvent which attacked the resin. I have an Impact Racing carbon fiber Draft race helmet which only has a clear coat on it (came that way). This picture shows one exactly like mine:

ps... the only thing I'd recommend for his helmet once stripped is spraying on a clear coat with some sort of UV protection...

Taking the paint of isn't going to hurt anything. I had so many chips and cracks in that helmet from getting hit, high sticked and what not. Aside from it's hideous appereance that is the most comfortable helmet I've ever had. Wish I could find a new one stuffed in storage somewhere.

Huh - so the Carbster was really just a player helmet made like a goalie mask - resin + fibre shell, whether the fibre is glass, aramid, carbon, or some combination thereof. My guess would be glass and carbon.

Well that's just too rational.

The OP could always send it off to eb painted by a goalie mask company... that could turn a few heads. :)

Team colour helmet with hot rod flames would be cool.

I bought one when Hockey Giant was clearing them out for $29 bucks. It was always just a little snug on my head then I broke a couple of the plastic clips trying to remove the head liner thing.

FWIW, during one of my helmet searches two years ago, I contacted one of the professors who authored a paper from McGill university regarding hockey helmets. Bottom line is, the foam in the helmet (VN/EPP) has a finite lifetime. His recommendation was new helmet every 5 years or sooner for best protective results.

I had two of the carbsters, loved them ... but did replace them (8500/S17/M11), only the M11 has fit the same or better. Bottom line is, the carbster's most protective life is past.

I could have told you what it looked like wo all the trouble. I had one crack apart on my head wen I took a slap shot off my temple.

Sounds like it did it's job though. Better the helmet than the skull.
