Bauer 4500 ear covers

Recommended Posts

hey guys. just got myself a bauer 4500 helmet in a large. The large fits me OK and rattles a bit. Medium fit me amazing but my ears wouldnt fit behind the plastic ear cover. I have a couple questions.

1.Is it bad that i can pull my helmet off without loosening the cage. Thats how the large fits on the smallest setting.

2. based off of this quote from my high school league rulebook "All players must wear (HECC) approved helmets with full cage/shield and chinstrap." would it be ok to remove ear covers.

3. anyone have a suggestion for helmets slightly wider then a 4500. I might just return mine seeing as i payed $100 at the shop for it and its fit is questionable

Any HS ref worth a shit will give you a penalty or minimum warn you to put the ear guards on before he sees you again.

that could be a problem. I guess ill just ask them next game. But does removing them make the helmet non HECC certified. If removing them does not affect the certification shouldnt it be my call on whether to use them or not

I don't remember the last time I had ear guards on my helmet. In the past 8 years I have played in the IHSHL High School, CSHL, MnJHL, and ACHA and have never had any issues. NY could be a little more strict though, I don't know.

Unless I'm imagining this wrong, this sounds like it could lead to all sorts of potential head/brain injuries. If you're in the $100 range for a helmet, you should be able to look at every brand. You should be able to find one that fits much better.

Recent thread where people discuss removing ear covers:

CCM helmets fit a little bit wider than Bauer helmets. Here's a thread where people discuss that:

1. Yes, it is bad. The helmet does not fit properly

2. No, it is a misconduct and you cannot play until they are replaced

3. CCM V08, Bauer 5100, RBK 4k and those are just the ones with VN padding

Any HS ref worth a shit.

USAH requires the ear flaps, it's rule 304b on page 24 of the 2009-2011 rule book.

The HECC certification specifies those ear covers be in place, so removing them makes the helmet "modified" and no longer HECC certified until they are reinstalled. If it is under NCAA or USA Hockey the TEAM shall receive a warning on the first offense and the offending player shall be ruled off the ice until the ear pieces are replaced or they get a helmet that is in compliance. The ACHA plays under NCAA rules but have a few modifications... I cannot find the email right now on the ear pieces.....

Edited to add that USA Hockey does sanction Roller hockey. I believe the subsidiary is "USA Inline"...
