Hockey Fund

Recommended Posts

What do you guys think? Good idea to start one up? figure out what your league fees are for a year and equipment purchase and try to set aside money every week rather then $400-$500 charges at a time?

Now only if a pre tax HSA was Hockey Saving Account and not Health Saving Account

Since being on a strict budget, I'm putting $100 a month in savings, part of which will have to pay for league fees, and hopefully new skates next Spring.

I'm married and hockey is a seriously touchy subject around our house. So yes I have a cash slush fund that I keep hidden. As a firefighter we're always at the grocery store, I'll get an extra 20 cash back or just get a little extra out of the ATM. Keep it hidden in my locker safe at work and that way when it comes time to pay league fees there's no large noticeable elephant of a transaction sitting in the room to fight over for month or so or constantly get thrown back in my face.

Same, she actually requests I go out and play otherwise I'm a PITA.

She has gotten in the habit of asking if I've bought any new equipment though, which has actually been nothing the last several months. So I usually ramble about my new pair of laces or roll of tape until she leaves

These guys will have to get married to understand this. I know where you're coming from. BTW, they knew you were playing hockey before you got married. That's the kicker.

If hockey is that much of a battle then perhaps saving for hockey isn't the biggest problem in the house.

I proposed during the late stages of the lockout, during the last year of my long layoff from the game - she was duped! :D

To her credit, I've never heard word one about what I've spent on gear. The only time she spoke up was, to her credit, when I was about to join a much more competitive league that was incredibly time-consuming (lots of practices) but also stupidly inconvenient (late icetimes, would have forced me to quit coaching, etc.). The guys on the team had talked me up into a state of mindless enthusiasm, and I was coasting on eight beers and a recent publication, but she brought me back down to earth as gently as a man could want.

Oh, and she also hesitated on doing a head-mold herself because she was afraid of suffocating me. I couldn't really dispute that one, either.

Our hockey league offers an EFT option where they take out $100 or so each month instead of collecting the full season fee up front. It's really convenient for smoothing out the cashflow, although they do charge a little bit extra for that option.

I don't have a hockey budget per se; our rule is anything under $50 doesn't require consultation with each other (obviously observing the spirit of the law over the letter is essential here); if I need something more expensive I'll generally ask for it for a holiday/birthday present. I'm not much of a gearhead though; I'd just as soon buy a new computer game or some new books as hockey gear, generally. But if I say I need a new helmet and it'll run $80 she won't have a problem with it, anymore than when she needs a new $100 pair of running shoes.

That said, I have toyed with the idea of putting a fixed amount ($20, $50, whatever) into a "fun" kitty each month to save up for those more expensive purchases. It seems like that would be a good way to save up for things I won't get otherwise ($400 camera lenses, etc ;)). I just never get around to it.

Im married and get it, but still thought it was comical. My wife loves that I picked up playing again. Something to keep me entertained during this incredibly rough patch of my life, so she doesn't argue. Then again since we are a bit cash strapped I dont buy gear hahaha. I have told her though that if I was back at my old job with that much expendable income then she would have something to worry about.

We also knew they liked jewelry and nice clothes before they got married, but do we like it when they indulge themselves ?
