Mouthguard for Communicating

Recommended Posts

I find the mouthguard I am using (some sort of mid level shock doctor makes it hard to speak out on the ice- my teammates cant understand "low" from "go" or calling my position's name for a change.

The mouthguard has worked great for protection- have taken a fist, elbow, stick, and puck up there and made it through with all my chicklets.

I've heard cutting the back edges off the guard can help, unless there is a MG that is particularly good for speaking, but is still protective.

Thanks

I've had loads made by the dentist for rugby in the past, I couldnt speak with any of them. I dont think theres a mouthguard in excistance than you can speak with!?

Gladiator makes a great mouth gaurd. i had one made for me in Sept and it has been worth every penny. i can talk a lot better and it is the most comfortable one i have ever worn. Just my $.02.

I'll second the gladiator guard. Great guard for $60 and you get a mold of your teeth plus 1/2 price on a replacement. I can talk like there's nothing there.

I use a Shock Doctor gravity and it is perfect because you wear it on your lower teeth. No problems breathing or talking although I think it is designed for people who wear a cage when they play.

just curious, i see pros (ECHL) with their mouth guards out (holding on to it with their teeth but not actually in their mouth where it should be... whats the deal with that?

I got an OPRO mouth guard which seems very similar to these Gladiator ones. Gladiators are slightly cheaper too. I went this route because at the time I didn't have dental insurance.

If I was getting a new I would just go to my dentist and get a custom from them.

As far as talking, it takes a little bit to get used to. I don't talk enough on the ice though. I am going to start wearing my guard again after my last game were I got tangled with a guy and slid head first into the boards. Any extra protection it might offer to my brain is good.

I had one custom made at my dentist, and I still can't stand it. Cost me about $80, too. Granted, it's better than any of the other mouth guards I've tried, but still not great.

With it, and my neck guard on, it feels like I'm going to vomit all the time.

As far as communicating goes, it's okay, and breathing isn't really an issue.

I do wear a cage, though, so I don't often put in the mouth guard. The only reason I got one was to guard against concussions, and I've been reading that they don't really make as much of a difference as people think.

Dumb kids who think they're invincible and are going to look like Todd Bertuzzi when they get done. Patrick Kane does it too.

Do these have straps? Youth are required to wear straps and my son wants this one. I have had good luck with the Shock DOctor DNA. When formed properly it locks onto your teeth really good and I really do not have any speaking for breathing problems other than being a fat ass that is.

You can buy it with or without straps

Custom made mouthguards from your dentist are the best way. It'll stay tight and I've never had any problems with mine and I've get them done every year. I can speak normal but more importantly, i don't get that gagging feeling as opposed to wearing cheap boil and bite varieties.

Plus if you guys have dental plans and your dentist is cool then he can write it off as a night guard!

My newest Shock Doctor was very hard to talk with and put in and out w/ out using my hand at first but after a few weeks of use it broke in and I can speak and spit it out in between face offs and shifts w/ out having to handle it.

I talked to a dentist last night. I coach one of his kids. I asked him about the UA mouth guard and it blossomed into a conversation about all brands. He said, "you know what my kids and I use?" nope I assumed custom. He said, " i have the ability to custom form guards from imprints but we use the $2 throw away types. the difference in protection is just not worth it."

I was shocked. We live in a fairly affluent area and given his relationship with all the families in our association I would think he could cash in on $50-$400 customs.

Fit and comfort are a differnt story but he said that kids in particular do not need anything more than 2 or 3 new cheap puth guards a year.

But Kane looks awesome with his mouthguard hanging out the side of his mouth: http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/05/po..._johan_fra.html
