How do you keep palms from wearing through?

Recommended Posts

The palm on my top stick hand always wears through, prematurely IMO. What can be done to remedy this, taping techniques? I use fairly minimal taping at the top of my stick to try and keep the friction down already. Is this just part of the game?

I used the tacki-mac grips on a few of my sticks and they seemed to keep the palms in pretty good shape. They can be a pain to put on though, and I never really used one long enough to see what it did in the long term. Might be worth a shot though.

I use Oggie Grip foam at the top with a layer of tape over it. If you have the butt end in your hand, you need to soften the edges in order to slow down the wear on your palms.

Interesting idea about softening the edges, never thought about that. I don't use wooden butts in my sticks, just the tops of the shafts themselves and they all have a decently rounded profile to them. I just use tape to make a thin knob at the end, but maybe the knob is inturn creating an edge. I've got some poron foam stuff I can use at work to try and soften though, then put a layer of tape over top; worth a shot.

I have done two things that have worked.

1. Go to a shoe repair shop and have them put a small piece of leather in the palm to add an extra layer. This does nothing to change the glove but the palm will last longer.

2. Tacki-Mac grips. I have used these for the past two years and besides turning the palm red, they have not caused any rips in the palm on my top glove.

If you do both, your palms should last forever, as mine are great after 2+ years of hockey 3 times a week.

The edges of the shaft are hard, you need to soften the edges. Being rounded doesn't matter.

+1 on the clear tape. Some guys don't like the slipperyness it causes but i prefer it.

The slicker it is, the harder you have to squeeze it to keep it from moving.

This stuff works great for me -- it's grippy, but compresses and it's softer than the material in your palms so it wears before they do :

Stretch Grip Tape

It makes a hell of a mess on your palms though. Everything sticks to it and then to your palm.

I use the white colored stuff, but I've never had that kind of problem with it. The tape itself eventually turns black, but it's been very kind to my gloves.

I still have a partial roll of the white, I ended up with a gummy mess on the palm of my glove and yanked it off after a couple games.

I use wooden plugs. A few draws along the driveway to round the edges is easy and keeps the gloves in good shape. I've also used the tacki-mac but more for the grip than to save the gloves.

No wood for you, though. Assuming you pull the end cap, start your tape job slightly beyond the end of the shaft and then fold the excess down into the hole. That way your palms only touch tape, never composite.
