Roller Hockey as an Olympic sport

Recommended Posts

So some of me and my buddies were watching the games and 1 of them said "Yo roller hockey should be the next summer olympic sport."

So I was just wondering what people would think, I think it would be a good idea, I mean they are going to try to make pole dancing an olympic sport why not roller hockey.

Again just an idea. :D

Definitely more of an opportunity for countries to develop talent than even ice hockey because ice time is so expensive that it limits talent development. I think initially, countries like Canada, USA, maybe some of the Western European countries would dominate the event, but in a couple of Olympics the world may have come along further. Similar to Women's hockey where US and Canada are clearly the dominant programs right now.

Who knew a few years ago that snowboarding would be an event, you know?

I think it would be a great summer Olympic sport. Is there any kind of international roller hockey tournaments or anything going on? I remember when I was like 11 my travel team played during an intermission at Disney Ice (I think it's Anaheim Ice now?) for a roller hockey game between the USA and Canada.

For the Olympics, make everything exactly the same as ice at that level, just no ice. Straight International/NHL hockey. This would not change the current roller configuration and rules, which are better for local rinks.... and players. Especially the contact rules.

Some questions are: Will there continue to be a noticeable trickle-down from ice to roller because of ever increasing ice cost? Will it become flooding from a massive melt down? Will it affect the ice hockey thought process?

IIHF inline

FIRS

I believe Inline Hockey was considered in the last selection for new Summer Olympic sports. I can't remember where it ended up to the list, but I am pretty sure it got beat out by Golf and Rugby.

Why would you take away the speed of the 4 on 4? Inserting checking into the sport also changes it dramatically. IMHO there is a lot more flow in a quality game of inline, not as much dump and chase or pinballing of the puck.

Ice has its followers and Inline theirs. I'm not sure why everyone wants to turn inline into ice.

I really don't think that inline hockey would make much headway. I mean do you remember beach hockey from CA that was on ESPN a long time ago. that's about as good as it gets. I think there are more strippers than inline skaters.

I agree. But, I'm talking about inline bending a little from perfection towards crossover for possible acceptance in the Olympics, or even (ha NHL Inline). There are a ton more ice players than roller, and if there is a large transition in the next few years, the rules in roller may move about a bit... again. It's a baby sport. Inline doesn't want to end up like baseball vs softball, which may be the way a lot of ice hockey fans look at it. There's room for both. Fan base and acceptance of the different game are things inline doesn't have enough of yet.

Apparently inline speed skating has had a lot of problems with people using performance enhancing drugs. It wouldn't suprise me if this has hurt the credibility of all inline sports in the eyes of the Olympic Commity. I'm pretty sure everyone here would love to see inline hockey in the summer olympics. Such an awesome sport, so much better than field hockey

I think what he ment was, not having Olympic rules and then regular inline rules....Basically saying the way ice in the Olympics now uses NHL rules instead of international rules, such as the size of the ice surface.....

He didnt mean take NHL ice hockey rules and then apply those same ice rules to Olympic inline rules....

There has been a push for many years for inline at the summer Olympics, HOWEVER as far as the USA goes they must first establish ONE unified USA national team....I dont know if many of you are aware of the like 3 diffrent "Team USA" inline teams that are out there now...

The sport of inline hockey in general is being held back because the higher powers ie: AAU,USA inline, etc...can not get along and decided who they want to be the head of inline sports....This has been a very, very big issue for a number of years and many of the top inline players are starting to drop from the "USA National program" ie: C.J. Yoder not wanting to participate....

Basically boils down to a power struggle, that helps nothing and hurts everything for the future of inline hockey...

Not going against your statement, but everyone needs to know it's a lot more complex than that and this battle has been going since inline hockey became a sport.

Hey TABLE TENNIS is an Olympic sport so roller hockey deifnantly deserves it and its funny me and my dad were talking about this during the opening ceremonies of the vancouver games.
