Looking for New Shin Guards

Recommended Posts

I presently own a pair of Mission Warp, or Warp Zero shin pads. They are ancient, as I got them as a Xmas gift in like 2001, but they have been tanks all along. They are finally starting to get to the point of needing to be replaced, as stitching is letting go and pieces are falling off.

I am wondering what might be comparable in today's shin guards. I have a 2nd pair, but I find the are much smaller, don't fit nearly as well and have less protection. Some might say the Missions are bulky, but I play D and they have held up amazingly well to blocking shots and just being great overall. Is there anything out there in retail I should be looking for???

If not, what should I search for on ebay and places like that??? the selection where I live is somewhat limited, but there is some variety.

I also use the Warp SZ shin guards and also play defense...they are bulky pads for sure. I do believe that i will be going to the higher end of the RBK stuff when the Missions get too beat up. Also the nicer Mission stuff that came out before Bauer bought them, are really nice too, plus you can find them on discount at most online dealers.

I would recommend looking at the Reebok line as well, but your best bet would be to check out your LHS to try the different pairs on.

When I was looking (replacing my weathered Jofas that I wore in college - 10 years ago), I decided that the Reebok was Jofa's successor, but when I tried the shin pads on, it was actually the 6Ks that I liked better than the 9Ks. This was based on price, as well as fit - the 6Ks did not have the flap at the top of the knee that we actually cut off, as it interferred with our pants.

So again, I would suggest looking at Reebok, but won't be so bold to say - this is it. Check your LHS to see how you like them, and see what other options you may have.

Good luck!

I play D as well and prefer a wide pad for shot blocking. Therefore, I was pretty much stuck with RBK or CCM for the "new" pads out...

I used '09 RBK 8K's and I really liked them. The straping system was great (although I broke a plastic tab off) and the front protection was also top-notch. The only problem was there was zero calf protection. After taking a few shots/slashes back there, I opted to find a pad with a calf wrap.

I recently bought some CCM V10 on close-out for about $50. I was going to get the RBK 10K's, but I love my CCM V10 elbows and thought their shins would be worth a shot... The fit is nice and wide, but not nearly as deep as the RBK's and the straping system plain sucks compared to the RBK as well. The calf protection is nice though...

If you want a wide shin pad, don't like using gobs of tape and want calf protection - just spend the $100 and get the 10K's. If the calf protection is not a concern for you, get the 8K's.

There are always last years models as well, but I won't go into those since some are available in limited sizes...

For what it's worth, I love my Nike/Bauer Pro Lightspeeds. They're a really nice all-around pad; great protection, middle-of-the-road in terms of width, good strapping system/fit, and the liner is comfortable. I wear them outside of my tongues, and they fit over my skates without an issue. If you wear them inside your tongues (such as Ovechkin), the bottom of the pad may be a bit wide, depending upon how big you are.

However, the "Pro Lightspeed" name has been discontinued; you may be able to find them on closeout. If I'm not mistaken, the new Bauer PRO line (as seen in the new catalogue) is very similar, if not identical.

I use ccm v08 LE's . They have an awesome calf wrap, they are cheap, and extremely protective. the interior memory foams are really comfy , they do run wide for people who prefer that.

How big are the RBK pads around. Do they fit big legs or do they need to be modified in most cases.

They're ridiculously wide and bulky. You should be fine.

OP: if it's the stitching that's failing, why not just invest in a heavy duty stitching awl? Things are damn useful.

As for myself, I use ST16s and love them. Nice snug fit that still works with my larger calves, seemingly well made and pretty protective.

i would reccommend the one75's. I'm a defensive d man and I like them a lot

Yup, I also have the On75's they are great shin guards. I used to have the RBK 5K's and they were too bulky.

Can someone recommend some "thinner" shinguards? I'm not so much concerned about the profile, but I have somewhat thin legs and I don't like using tape to hold shinguards in place (I split time between ice and inline, and for inline I don't like the tape against my skin or over my pants). I'm going shopping on Friday, but I wanted to cut down on trying on everything. I currently have tps R6, and they're always shifting on me.

The RBKs are big enough. I have very large "hockey" legs, and they fit my calves fine.

I am wearing 2008 (I think) RBK 6Ks (in case you did not see my above post).

I just got the Reebok 10K shin pads and I love them. They are so comfortable, it barely feels like anything is there, and I feel nothing when blocking a shot/getting slashed. Well worth the money.
