Elbow pads with BEST range of motion?

Recommended Posts

I was using an old pair of Graf 500 elbow pads before and loved the full range of motion, the ability to straighten out your arm, and how it wasn't bulky, but I wanted something with a bit more protection since it looked basically like a stretch sleeve with a foam pad on the elbow.

I'm having a hard time finding something similar... maybe with a hard cap?

It seems the new 2 or 3 piece design are all bulky (especially the elbow bumps sticks far out and get caught in the sleeves) and don't allow you to fully straighten out your arm thus keeping then somewhat bent.

Any recommendations??

I already tried:

CCM Vector V08 - thought the 3 piece would be better but was actually super bulky and stiff

Reebok 8k - fits awesome but its a bit bulky and I didn't like the fact that I couldn't straighten out my arm all the way, thus limiting movement

I have both Reebok 8k (the Reebok version of the Jofa 9144, if I'm not mistaken), as well as Easton ST16 elbows. I feel that both provide good range-of-motion and protection. The Reeboks required more break-in than I was used to - a full season - and they are a bit bulkier than the Eastons. However, now that they're both broken in (over a season of very competitive men's league in each), they're both ultra-comfortable and don't restrict my range of motion at all. How long have you been wearing the 8k pads? You may just need to break them in a bit more.

I'm personally not a fan of the three-piece design. Like you, I find them very bulky/restrictive.

Have you tried high end Eastons? The S9, at the time, was the best 3-piece elbow pad I've ever tried on.

I've come to like the Jofas 5044/9144 because they stay put and you get good range of motion. I don't find them bulky but others might disagree.

Jofa 9025, by far. Only trouble is, they've stopped making them years and years ago. Occasionally, a pair will turn up on eBay here and there and they usually aren't cheap. They're well worth it, though.

I've had my pair since 2005 and I love them. I don't understand why Reebok hasn't revived it in some form other than the fact that it doesn't really have any bicep protection, so some parents may steer their children clear of it. For those of you that passed them up because of that, I am truly sorry. They are fantastic.

I have the 9K elbows, the ones before the current line up. At first I didn't like them at all because it was a little bulky and it felt stiff. It took a good month or so until I finally got used to them and they were decently broken in, but after that they've been great. I don't really notice the bulk and my range of motion is pretty normal (normal comparing to other elbows I've used in the past). The plus with these ones for me is that the protection is great on these.

I second the Jofa 9025 suggestion. I've owned a pair for 2 years and will keep them until they fall apart.

I also have the RBK 9144's and the Easton ST 16's. As previously mentioned the RBK's take a little longer to break in and are a bit more bulky but still offer a great range of motion. The Eastons are a sleeker fit and also offer a great range of motion. Both elbow pads are extremely comfortable and don't slip at all. I would recommend either one.

My 8025s are starting to get a little ragged, so I've been keeping my eye out for another pair. Unfortunately the prices are usually absurd when they do pop up. If you can find a mid level pad with two straps on the forearm, you can just cut off the cuff and end up with the same protection. The tough part is finding a low-mid level pad with two forearm straps.

The main issue I'm having with the bulk is that the elbow cap bump is getting caught on my jersey

I don't like wearing baggy jerseys but I guess I'll have to buy a jersey one size up just to make the elbow area fit?

Just got a pair of RBK 8k pros. Needs to be broken in but good range of motion. Like another post stated, stays well on the elbows. Better than the new Rbk stuff imo and found them at a great price at HG.

I am in love with my new Bauer Supreme One75's. I can fully straighten my arm with ease and they are very light and comfortable. Another perk is they dont move down your arm at all, which was a big problem with a lot of others I have had.

I have also been looking for a new pair for a year or two now. Basically, my stuff (the same I have worn since college - 10+ years) needs a refresh. I currently wear a pair of Ferland 6500s "Draft Series" (circa late 90s) that have been perfect. But honestly the plastic caps have been broken for a few years now and they provide little protection as they don't really lock in my elbow and can slide on me. However, the fit and bulk are perfect. There is not a large plastic nub adding to the bulk, which I haven't been able to find!

So far, over the past year, I have bought three pads, but I can't seem to dump these Ferlands (despite the broken caps). My first of the three were a "special order type" RBK that was probably between the 6K and 8K, Bauer Vapor XXV (a Hockey Monkey ordered One90 that then told me they were not in stock so this is a sub), and now the 8K Pro.

Again, I am not looking for the big, bulky plastic cap, which the first two had. I really wanted the One90, but haven't been able to find them in large, as I tried on one of my players pairs and they seemed to be what I was looking for. I just received the 8K Pro (Jofa 9177) but they seem too tight. The bulk is there, but they are fairly comfortable without the huge pointy cap, and is what I am looking for, but the medium (5) has my elbow/forearm really cramped. I have larger forearms, but I am not sure if the large will solve this issue, and don't think it will. The bicep also seems to be tight and pinch a little. All of me wants to like them, and part of me says they would eventually break-in, but not so certain.

Anyone who's RBK Pros/Jofas are now broken in want to shed some light? (Sorry to thread-jack, but my comments seemed relevant when I started.) Will they get "wider" around the elbow and looser around the bicep, or is that just the fit?

I just really hate the movement to the hard, plastic, nipple cap that sticks out of most of the mainline elbow pads being offered. No wonder there are so many more injury causing hits with elbows (more serious than if just a straight elbow).

They will loosen up. I've got my strap about a quarter-to-half inch tighter than before on the forearm(size 6) and the bicept pad is unmoved but I leave that strap as loose as possible so it doesn't bind up on me.

Flex the elbow pad where the female side of the velcro is on the forearm with your hands and try to mold them to fit your arms, that will help a little.

Thanks for the replies (again... sorry to hijack the OP's thread).

I think I will try them out. Starting to think maybe I should have gone with a large (size 6)... oh well. I love the sizing listed on them - Size 5 (Medium) - for 5' 8" to 6' 4". Talk about a range!

I will try the "molding" and see if I can get them to open up a bit. Thanks! I'll let you know.

bit of a threadjack here, but does anyone know what the fit is like on those rbk 5k's listed on the sportsplus site compare to the jofa 9144's or 8k pro's(minus cuff extension obviously)? do the fit the same, bigger or smaller?
