nickerjones 8 Report post Posted March 6, 2010 Ok I am a beginner. I can skate forward but that is about it . I am joining a beginning hockey team and trying the trial by fire method. I al so am starting an Adult instructional class that focuses on skating . I have a problem though. WHen I am skating it feels like my right skate blade is not perpendicular to the ice. It feels like I am always on my inside egde. It makes difficult to get started going and such.... ANything I can do ? I know this is hard to explain but looks like this ... This a pic from a while ago when i first got skates and I was in Canada with my wife and her family was pressuring me to get out there..bigger pic herehttp://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=6346...mp;id=514076581this is prob a lil more exaggerated that it is now. I dont feel any pain in my foot ... I just can tell its not proper form etc... I think this might be hold me back from progressing in my skating skills.... jumtao 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2010 There can be many reason's why you're skating on your inside edge but it's a common problem with many beginners including myself when I first started skating. Some of the common issues maybe that the skate is not a proper fit. If the skate is too big or the wrong skate for your type of foot can cause this to happen. If however your skates do fit 'properly', then try to lace them up a little bit tighter.Another thing I've noticed is a person's confidence. Most feel more stable skating on the inside when starting out, but as you get better, this problem will go away. I suggest taking some skating lessons if possible since this will allow you develop proper form. Form is very important for effective and controlled skating. epstud74 24 Report post Posted March 6, 2010 Bend your knees a bit more. Where are you located? Do you have access to a good shop? The skates could also be a bad fit.
nickerjones 8 Report post Posted March 6, 2010 Bend your knees a bit more. Where are you located? Do you have access to a good shop? The skates could also be a bad fit.I am in Oklahoma and there are 2 ice rinks here but I would not say they are good and knowledgeable shops. I have always wore a size 12 shoe, ever since i was 16. So my wife bought these as a gift for me in Canada and gave them to me at Christmas time while we were there visiting the family. I tried them on they fit... I was never fitted for them. However, I said that to say this, I measured my feet and am actually 11 1/2 so these might be a size big .I also have to wear gel toe caps , as when I skate i get sever pain in both my big toes. do you think wearing a tie up ankle brace would keep my ankle from bending towards the inside? sectachrome 40 Report post Posted March 6, 2010 If your shoe size is 12, and the skate is also a 12, I would say theres a good chance the skate is too big. I made the same mistake before. My shoe is also a 12, but my skates are a 10. Besides that, Im sure youll get better pointers in your class from someone who can actually watch you skate rather than looking at a postage stamp sized picture. Get in the right size and that should eliminate the toe pain. It will also put the support in the right places. Just to confirm your size problem, loosen your laces and push your foot as far forward as you can without causing pinching or pain. If you can fit anything more than the width of a #2 pencil behind your heel, it is too big. My let foot is a hair over 11" and I wear 10EE skates. Resolving your fit issues should help resolve the other problems greatly.
SolarWind 23 Report post Posted March 7, 2010 completely agree on getting the right fit, BUTnobody seems to be mentioning weak ankles as a potential cause, but for a lot of beginners it's exactly what the issue is - ankles rolls inwards... this will get better in time. nickerjones 8 Report post Posted March 7, 2010 OH i apologize... The skates are size 10.5. Earlier I meant to say I wear a size 12 and the skates are made for a size 12... lol sorry! Weak ankles could be the key , what else can I do besides skating to strengthen them ?
heybrady 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2010 Just keep skating. You'll get there.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 7, 2010 Weak ankles could be the key , what else can I do besides skating to strengthen them ?Jump rope, put a tape line on the floor and two foot hop left and right of the line, squats (one and two leg), one and two foot hops as fast as you can for speed and for height, etc....
