Probably ankle guards, some guys wear them because of slashing or blocking shots, defence mostly though.

just hockey has the front of the foot guard and a front and ankle guard,there made by skatemate. the original ones were leather and too bulky.these are nice. and those skates look wicked.

I have seen the skates in person. I thought they looked weird so I grabbed them and copped a look. That "pad" looking think is actually a velcro strap that LaPointe uses. Just like you would see on childrens' shoes. So that's all it is, a velcro strap.
