Reebok 10k vs 6k shin pads

Recommended Posts

I have X:40s and they are great, my LHS was out of reebok shin pads so I got these. But if you don't like the look of tapered shin pads then don't get them, good calf wrap too. Very protective.

Yeah, the buckles suck. Both of mine broke within the first month of use (3-4 times per week), not while dressing, but during the course of play. I just thread the straps through the other unbroken part of the buckle (the permanent side) - it fits in there fine and that part is strong enough to last.

I actually thought that was what it was there for. I feed it through that hole then looped it back under the other half of the clip.

Maybe you're right - that would certainly explain why so many break. I assumed the open part was just to make it easier to hook the strap in and go, but what do I know. The open part certainly can't take the rigors of actually holding the pad on, so maybe it is mean to thread some other way.

I always hook it through the open part, but I will pull it tight straight across (no pressure on the clip) and wrap back against the leg and on to the velcro. That way there's a lot less force on the little clip. It still stretches a bit sometimes and makes me nervous.

I don't see how the open part has any value, if it's not there to hook the strap on.

Hey, I thought the same thing. I was only trying to give RBK the benefit of the doubt, since any engineer worth paying would have known that hook couldn't hold up to the rigors of actual hockey play. Truthfully, I'm pretty sure it was just a mistake, a clever idea that was poorly executed and ended up being worthless. But you can lace the strap differently or just use tape, and aside from that single flawed hook, the 10k is an awesome shin guard. I've had mine close to a year now and I can still jump up, land directly on my knees, and not feel a thing.

Yeah, even if it originated in marketing, we could have expected it to be engineered better.

My 8K's haven't broken yet, after several months, we'll see how long my hooks last. I'll use 'em while I've got 'em, but I don't think they're much of a "feature". They don't really save me any time.

I like the hook. Instead of trying to fish the strap through a narrow opening, you just slide it in from the top. It sounds like a stupid thing, but it's a nice touch. Sometimes I do waste 5-10 seconds trying to fish the other strap through the hook (the one above the knee). Should have used a plastic piece twice as thick though.

Sure, but if they didn't have the hook, they could have made the opening for the strap enough bigger to not be a problem.

Bingo. Or they could have made the buckle out of brass or a fiber-reinforced plastic resin. And thicker, as mentioned above.

Anyone having any durability issues with the 6k shin? I thought I heard the knee cap was prone to cracking? This would be a let down, I wish they never would have moved away from the Jofa/Swedish stuff, I've had my 9090's for about 6 years without the slightest hint of a crack.

If you're referring to the 6k kinetic shins, I've had it since september and have not experienced any cracking nor durability issues.

Yup the KFS model. Good to hear about the durability, can you compare the bulkiness to any other Jofa/Rbk/Reebok shins?

If comparing to RBK/Jofa models, the only one is the 9k. The 6k is slimmer than it of course. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. :(
