chrisplosions 1 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 hey guys, so a little background on my build before i get some suggestions...i'm 23, 5"5 and 120lbs.i'm currently using a reebok 8.0.8 (int 65flex, datsuyk). i've been using a super long stick, probably up to my forehead since i started and recently cut it down about 6 inches. stick handling is great now, but the thing is as stiff as a board. i recently compared my int 8.0.8 to a jr 8.0.8 and they're pretty similar, the length of the stick are the exact same, blade and shaft a tiny bit smaller...but the 50 flex is amazing. my int 8.0.8 is probably 80 flex after i cut it down which means i should be about 160lbs to get a good flex out of it. what do you guys think if i get jr 8.0.8 stick? will the smaller shaft and blade make it worse?ps. where do i post questions like "how to take a proper shot while skating" and questions like that? i'm currently shooting off a board outside and i can wrist/snap it pretty good and everything standing still, but when i get on the ice it feels like a totally different game....? Chadd 916 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 The only thing to worry about with a junior stick is how it will stand up to slashes from adult players. If it gives you a better shot and feels more comfortable, go with the junior stick. As for the technique questions, the general hockey forum is the best place for that.http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php?showforum=
Machinehead2k5 32 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 Coming from a guy who is 5'8'' 225 Indian (granted we're from Asia, so i guess that makes me asian) I use the same jr shaft for the past 6 seasons. Easton Z Bubble. I've taken many slashes from it and whatnot and holds up pretty good.

Machinehead2k5 32 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 I have big legs, well not anymore since breaking my ankle. Now I've probably packed on the fat pounds. My upper body is somewhat small, hence the 50flex along with the fact that I chop my sticks down pretty short like you do. the JR shaft is a little smaller radius than the int/sr sticks but I'm used to it. My backup stick is a 70flex. montreal int shaft. The radii of shafts doesn't affect me too much. Depending on the blade you buy, the feel will be different. I like to use wood blades (Easton) or thicker composite blades (Easton UL or RBK blades) to curve them.

Jarick 5 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 I'm not sure about the junior, but I could barely flex a 75 Easton Z-Bubble uncut. The Easton shafts tend to be very stiff.
kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 If you want to stick with intermediate, check out Eastons Int. OPS. They now come in a 60, and a 65.
chrisplosions 1 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 the problem i have is that since i'm 5'5" i have to cut most sticks down, even an intermediate i need to cut down at least 6 inches. this makes the flex go from 60 to 80. if i get a jr stick at 55 flex it'll stay at 55 flex because i won't have to cut it down...and i need a 50-60flex cause i'm a small guy at 120lbs.i've never been able to feel the flex of a stick with a shot because all int/senior sticks are too stiff
AIREAYE 248 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 Im asian, 5'9", 130 and I use full length SR sticks, 77 flex preferably but that broke so stuck with my mid 90's One55. I know it may feel stiff for you, but if you have no other option, you'll get used to it
Wolfpack_1986 154 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 chris,i'm 5'4" same weight and age... i've been using sr 75s... juniors i've found torque too much for my liking. intermediates same problem. i can still feel the seniors flex... just remember you're not going to see stiffer sticks bend quite as much, that doesnt mean it's not flexing. it doesnt have to deflect a foot to mean it's flexing! just go with what's comfortable, but like chadd said, i'd be concerned about holding up to slashes
Machinehead2k5 32 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 do you feel a difference in your shot between the 50flex and 70 flex? and does it affect your stick handling/passing/receiving at all?I can feel the difference in the passing, especially on longer passes/breakout passes, the stick flexes more. But other than that, I noticed that stick handling/receiving passes are roughly the same. Like I said before your stick should last you at least a few seasons if not longer in terms of durability. I don't shoot many slappers but there's no need to when I'm a better snap/wrist shot person anyways. JARICK: I have a 75 flex Z Bubble and it's a frigging I-beam that Mike Holmes would use. starsfan71 9 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 I am about 5 foot 6 130 and I use a 60 flex one95 and get a ton of whip out of it. I think it should be fine as I was your size when I got the stick, I have just grown a bit and put on some weight.

The blade has gotten somewhat chipped up from lots of battling in the corners, but so far the shaft looks pristine. I'm surprised at 5'8" you're using a junior length. I'm about 5'7" and loving life with an intermediate.I'm 5'8" and also use a junior, but I have to add an extension. An intermediate would be the perfect length for me but I still can't flex it very well.
Machinehead2k5 32 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 It has a plug in it. Until I get back to work and make money, I won't be buying sticks. Probably move up to INT sticks or use a easton UL 60 flex shaft.
fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 I'm a 6ft tall 190 lbs asian... used a 75 flex intermediate for a good portion of my hockey life and it wasnt a problem... moved back up to 85 since though.
hockeyfreak7 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 I'm in a kinda similar situation. My ideal flex is 70-75 flex, but I like my sticks at 53". Senior sticks are way too tall and I'd have to cut about 4" off any intermediate stick also which would make it too stiff. Are there any sticks that come at around 55" pre cut? Or a 60 flex intermediate length stick?
Machinehead2k5 32 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 RBK makes a light flex stick which is either 60/65 and they usually run a little longer.
Wolfpack_1986 154 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 ok, i have to ask... why the hell does being asian have anything to do with the topic. i'm laughing my ass off at the people stating what race they are.
chilimax21 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 I'm 5'10" and 155lb. and am using an intermediate Easton ST stick with 1" of the plug left on. I can get some nice slapshots with this thing. I had a bauer one95 at 87 flex cut down to the same length as the ST. It was slightly stiffer after being cut, but still able to flex it. BTW I'm asian.=)
titand19 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 I'm Asian 5'9 165. Used most flexes from 100 down to 77. Usually find that 85ish is great balance. 77 is whippy and good for passing, but shooting I like the stiffness. Is there a difference between the blade sizes of int and sr? dayroc 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2010 i'm 5'6 and asian. i've used many different flexs, but i've narrowed it down to 2 sticks. my Sr one95 77 flex (cut like 6 inchs) and my s19 INT 65 flex (cut like 2 inchs to make it 74'ish), their both awesome.
