12" Wooden plug...too big?

Recommended Posts

Last year I, or should I say my teammate, broke my One95. I dumped the puck in for a change, turned around to head to the bench, and WHAM he runs into my snapping my precious twig in half :-( The extra butt end I had laying around wasn't long enough, however I just measured where it's broken and it's about 11 inches below the knob. Hockey Giant has 12" wooden end plugs and I'm gonna scoop one up. Has anyone used an end plug that big? I'm assuming I won't be able to tell the difference other than maybe a few extra grams or whatever. I figure it's worth the $2.49 to atleast try and salvage my stick. Any insight?

nothing wrong with trying. You might want to cut down an old wooden shaft and use that as well.

From my experience, the flexing might cause the tenon to break... but for $2.49, why not give it a shot?

losing 12" of stick is a pretty big deal. if you've got an emotional connection to the stick or you don't want to fork over more benjis for a new one95, the plug will be worth a try.

if you don't end up liking it, the plug will always be useful in the future.

Buddy on my team has a Warrior Dolomite and has 12 inch butt end in there but then cut it down so id say its about 9 inches long and he hasnt had any problems with it in last 2 weeks.

I used a 10" part of a broken shaft as an extension joined with a tenon and it worked fine. Just put some tape and glue on the tenon and make sure it's super tight. As long as it's not flexing you should be fine.

This idea crossed my mind as well. Since the break is up high by my top hand I was wondering if it'd be possible to somehow make a wooden plug into a dual sided tenon with maybe an inch or so of wood joining the two sides. I'm not sure how I would shave the one end of the plug down to fit inside the shaft though. Any suggestions?

i have done that with a couple of comp goalie sticks. and so far no problems i heard about from the guys that i gave them to.

as far as slimming down the tenon put it in a vise and use a sharp chisel to remove the extra wood. then tape around it and put it in one end and then the other end. after that you should be fine. the important thing to do here is make sure the tenon is longer than 3" per side. the ones i've done have been around 8" with 4" per side.

I didn;t realize they had butt ends that long for sale. I broke my twig quite a ways down from the knob and thought I would get comeone to customize a butt end shaft for me.

Why dont you get your stick repaired? It seems like you have both peices and it doesnt cost all that much. My CNT broke about 24 inches down and i got it fixed for twenty dollars and it works great now.

I once broke my 10k about two thirds down and put in a 8 or 9" plug took some warm ups seems but broke off the extension on my first one timer. I wouldn't suggest anything bigger then 4 or 5'' max

As of right now I'm just going to use the spare butt end I have laying at home. My stick will be around 3" shorter than before but screw it I'll just give it a shot. I'm interested in getting it fixed now that you've mentioned it. I've heard of it before, but do most LHS offer this or what??

Who did you use to get the shaft repaired? Everyone I have asked is 50+ bucks.

All of the long butt ends I've seen are made of one piece of wood. If I were going to use one that long I would try to find a shaft from an old laminated stick like an old Titan 3020 or an Montreal to make one... both have a bunch of ~1/16" wood and glass lams... would be much stronger than a solid piece of wood. The trend has been to longer and longer shafts so shortening yours by 4 inches may just help your stick handling...
