My S17 blade just snapped - any ideas?

Recommended Posts

It snapped at the blade mid-point. Its still attached so I'd really say its a very big blade crack.

Can I take this somewhere and get a blade repair?

If I could, would it be worth doing, or has this stick officially bit the dust?

Biggest pisser is that its day 33 since I purchased it on April 4th.

I hear that when you break a stick like a couple days after warranty they still might be able to help you out. Worth giving Easton a call at least IMO.

Give Easton a call and tell them how disappointed you are that you paid so much for what you thought was a quality product and it just broke. Bauer wouldn't replace a One95 shaft for me a couple days out of warranty, but Warrior has replaced a broken Dolomite stick for a buddy of mine that was several weeks out of warranty and Easton has done it in the past. Worth a shot. If not, don't bother with a blade repair. The S17 blades were notorious for going soft and breaking rather quickly, so no point in trying to fix a broken blade that was crap to begin with. Your best bet (if they don't replace it) is to turn it into a shaft.

Some people have cut them up high enough to turn them into standard shafts. Not to mention flipping the shaft works just fine for many experienced players including myself.

not really. the interior wall of the elliptical shaft is still somewhat rectangular and can fit a tapered blade.

I know you did an s19. Have you tried with a s17?. I myself couldn't deal with a flipped s17 because of performance issues and having the taper in my hand. If someone wanted the original length and cut high up, you'd need a long extension.

So I have a new update.

I took the advice given from you guys here and got on the phone with Easton.

They will return my stick even though its 3 days past its date!

But it gets better - since they are out of production for the S17 they are giving me an S19!

The rep went to his Supervisor and got it OK'd.

This is the first Easton I've bought in awhile, but they will be getting my business again.

Thanks for the advice, too bad I can't buy you a beer.

Later.

Now THAT'S what I like to hear. Glad Easton is stepping it up in a situation like this.

If I were in a position where I had to worry about paying full retail for my sticks, reading this would piss me off pretty good.

In this case it's not a guy misleading or cheating a company. It's just a guy who decided it was worth asking and it paid off. Like the old saying, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you have a problem it would be with Easton's PR initiatives, not with the customer.

I am in the market for paying full price and to be honest with you, it is making me think I should order up some s17's and just play the hell out them! It also makes me seriously consider the S19.

I agree with both of your thinking, but to be fair to th OP and Easton, he doesn't give us much information on how the blade cracked. Could have been a defect or could have been misuse/abuse.

Most companies I assume would help a customer in this case if he has what would have been a legitimate warranty claim.

Well I suppose you can look at this as the glass being half empty.

But really this is an Easton story IMO about Customer Service.

They made a choice to make that a point with me and as I said in the thread, I will make their product my primary stick of choice.

In today's horrible business cycle taking GOOD care of your customers isn't just a cool thing, its an excellent business strategy.

As for how I broke the stick, it was a simple play where I went to get the puck with another player and the force on the blade caused it to crack (looks like its along the line of the front face of the composite sheet). It wasn't any kind of abuse of the stick on my part, just a hockey play. All of this I explained to them.

They warranted the stick with all the the info on the table.

So from my POV, this is a cup is half full story and with that might give you more confidence in their products than you might with other brands (see the Bauer story above) and buy more of Easton's sticks.

I like Easton's customer service, always had good luck with them. Bauer on the other hand is terrible. I broke an Endure that was still within warranty, sent it in, about 5 weeks later I get a stick back. They sent me a XXX Lite which I was thrilled about. However when I went to put a plug in the end of the shaft it SPLIT APART. I call up Bauer and get some snotty french-canadian guy who tells me tough luck, they don't do anything about defective warranty replacements. I stuck it in a vise and cut below the split part and everything was just fine, but that was the first and last Bauer OPS I ever bought.

Good to hear Easton helped you out even though you were three days after warranty. If something happens and the curve and/or flex ends up being different. Please still be grateful, we don't need another one of these guys....

did you have to bring up that thread again ;)

I hope it doesn't get going again haha

Well I just hope I get back an 85 flex, but even if that doesn't happen I will still be saying this.

THANK YOU EASTON!

yes. didnt actually use it. the shaft was cracked higher up, so i cut it low just to see what it looked like inside. i hear ya with the flip method. i cant stand it. you can definitelly cut higher up, where the shaft transitions from elliptical to standard taper design, but it is fairly high up and you would definitely need a big plug.... which i've done before, and i gotta say, it takes alot away from the stick.

That guy was ridiculous though...He got a free stick & an S19. Not a free "garbage" stick, but an ST or whatever that was. I'd be freakin' happy!
