Just purchased x:60 skates

Recommended Posts

I've been skating in vapor x:15 skates for the better part of a year now with no issues. After a 10 year break from hockey I decided to start with basic skates but I've now gone with the x:60s. I've tried them on in the store, they felt fine. I'm now sitting at home with them tightly laced up and I'm noticing two spots on the outer edge of each foot are incredibly stiff and a little painful. The spot is pretty much halfway down each foot, on the outside around/below the bauer logo on the outer edge of the skates.

Having skated in x:15s all year and finding them comfortable I assumed that x:60s would be an easy transition. I know that they are a very stiff skate so I'm hoping this spot will just soften over time, but right now I can't see them being skateable. I've also noticed that walking around in them they feel a lot better than when I'm sitting down so it seems like there's a little hope that they'll soften up.

So MSH, is it worth me baking these things and hoping they give a little? Or should I just cut my losses and try a different skate? They fit quite well everywhere else, it's just two incredibly stiff points around the mid-outer edges.

Yeah, I feel the same way...

It is definitely a gamble, but I can't see why they wouldn't break in a little. The toe box also feels amazing compared to the X:15's and they are so comfortable everywhere else on the skate. I'll be incredibly disappointed if I have to return these.

They might break in a little, but I have a suggestion. Perhaps continue using your old skates while you improve your technique and get stronger, because that big of a jump might inhibit your skating. It would also give you more time for break in by wearing your skates around the house etc.

You don't need to ever bake them but I don't see why you wouldn't. Baking can only make the skate fit better.

Don't lace the skates tightly. Your foot can't breathe through the laces stretching/giving when the laces are too tight. Loosen the laces. The skates are strong enough to support you. Get them baked, also. Any new skate may have a few hot spots that you have to work through.

You don't need to bake them, but I would. There's really no sense not baking them, a lot of times it will get rid of any hot spots. You've got to realize though you went from a entry model to a pro model skate, there's going to be huge differences in the construction, fit and feel of the skate. You won't get much give in the 60s even after you bake them.

Exactly! Any pair new pair of skates always hurt the first few times.

But def. bake them to make the transition a bit better.

Another good point, you dont need to lace up your skates so tightly, but this depends on your skating style, technique, yrs experience etc...

Maybe he is asking because once you bake...there is no taking them back to LHS?

Am I wrong? Thanks

Yeah but he was asking about skating THEN baking. Even if he does that, he still cant return them because he sharpened and wore them.

PM9, how much do you weigh? If you are over 180 Id say you should be fine and the spot will break in over time. If you are thin and light, you may not have enough weight to put the amount of pressure on that stiff boot to really stretch it or break it in fully. The vapors are somewhat narrow in the foot compared to the supremes. You may want to try a one100 supreme. Same price I think but more room in the forefoot. Your call.

I weigh about 195. I spent about 6 hours in them yesterday but they're definitely starting to give. They're stiff as hell but I am confident they'll be alright now.

Thanks for the advice everyone! :)

I got a pair of x60s last month. After I baked them I skated in them for 2 hours the next day at a public skate. No pain what so ever. The only issue I had was a little bit oh heel lift in the left boot which went away after a few hours in them.

Bake them if you haven't yet.
