Skate Pain

Total One Question for the Skate Guys:

So I've had my total ones since the release date and they fit amazing right out of the box, no problems what-so-ever...until about two weeks ago. I started experiencing sharp pain in my ankle bone (where the tibia sticks out of you ankle and kinda resembles ball on the inward side of your leg) while skating, to the point where the lower part of my ankle started to bruise and develop this weird callus. Now, my question is: is it best to re-bake at this point or to get that ankle area punched out or should I do something else entirely? Thanks in advance for any help.

^^Nah homie, I'm not getting bumps, I'm getting a ton of pressure and pain in my ankle located specifically on the bone that sticks out on the inside of of foot by the ankle.

Homie? Okay, if that's how you roll dawg B) I just saw that you had calluses. And by the bone on the inside of your ankle, do you mean your ankle bone itself? And I think a rebake or a boot stretching should help

The specific bone that is hurting is the tibia, which that runs down the inner leg and ends at the talus and forms the pseudo "ankle bone" that we think of. I think you're right, a rebake or punch out is probably the way to go. I just wasn't sure which would be the better method to pursue.

Whichever costs less, which I assume would be the bake, at least around here. Once you get the hot boot on, maybe put pressure on the area thats' hurting to give you room,

I had the same issue with my x60s (pro stock which are insanely stiff). Punching them out in that area made a world of difference. Only cost me $5 to do both skates.

That ball/bump on the end of your tibia is called the medial malleolus. A malleolus/malleable is another word for hammer and I'm guessing it made a pretty good one back in the day...caveman day. Baking again sounds good. Maybe put a small piece of gauze or other material directly over the bump to expand that area more during the process.

Tubesteak - Thanks for the name of that thing, I was looking around for awhile and couldn't find that darn name :) & great idea about using something else to help expand the area during rebaking.

So guys, I'm looking for any final input on my skate issue before I sell my TOs. The medial malleous (ankle bone that stick out on the inner portion of your foot) is still swelling up and fluid is building up on the bone for a few days after skating. I've had the skates rebaked and punched out and nothing stops that pain. Last night I switched back to my one75s and I felt fine ( I noticed the liners of the two skates are quite different, the TO being a bit harder while the one75 being softer). What gets me is that I wore these skates pain free for the first two months then this started up in both feet (the first punch out solved the issue with the left foot but not the right). Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed because I'm a little hesitant to take an $800 loss on these. Thanks in advance for any help.

Just wondering--have you called Bauer? I don't really have any experience with their customer service, but I would think that they would want to help solve your problem, given that you dropped $800 on a brand new product of theirs.

I had pain there once, and I used one of these, turned sideways to cover the pointy ankle bit.

You will not make that skate work for you no matter what you do to it, for two reasons. You need a boot which has deeper instep in that area so it will wrap around your ankle bone. Plus you will need a thick felt tongue which would provide some padding in that areas, unlike the stock foam tongue where the edge digs into the bone. In your case the ankle instep is too short plus the edge of the tongue is pressed against that area causing you more pain. The reason it took 2 months and not right away is because it took 2 months to develop a bigger lump in that area so now you need even more instep length to wrap the skate around the ankle. Sell the skates, wait till your bump is healed then get fitted for a custom pair, or stick with a softer boot like one75 or newer model one80.

its weird but i have the same problem with my one80. i believe its because the edge of the felt tongue that pressing the bone.. i switched back to one75, no more pain. maybe i had to trim the tongue a bit. the ankle pad itself is fine so far..

Yep. They have one specifically have malleolar sleeves. I used them for a while. keep in mind these things do add depth to your skate.

I know that you have taken steps to get your skate fixed, but have you been doing anything to help heal your ankle? If it's already bruised or irritated, continually wearing a skate- even with a punch, pad, etc.- is still going to cause discomfort. You should be icing your ankle 20 min a time, a few times a day. Maybe try some ice massage after you skate. You can also take some tylenol before you skate to help minimize the pain. If it still hurts, you might just have to take a few days off of skating to let it heal, and then try skating again with a pad on your ankle.

Rachael7- I actually just bought some bunga pads as my last ditch effort for these skates, I really hope they work. Maybe I'll pick up that ankle wrap and turn it sideways like you suggested, it sure couldn't hurt.

Rubo- I unfortunately agree with everything you said, it sucks to have to cut losses on such a great pair of skates (cause beyond the pain they are awesome hahaha), but like you said, the instep is to shallow and it's probably better to get something more suited to my personal needs.

Andoy- You mention malleolar sleeves, is that a bunga product or something bauer offers?

forbs02- yeah bud, I've taken time off and iced before. I took 1.5 weeks off a while back while on vacation and the pain came back immediately when I stepped back on the ice.

I like the lace bite pads turned sideways better than the malleolar sleeve, as I believe the lace bite pads are thinner. At any rate, it was more than enough to take care of the irritation I had there at the time.

Hi guys, I'm actually having the same exact issue with my One60s. Do you think these would help or should I get one of the other pads mentioned?

You can try. It worked for me when I used them but to go back on my old post, the pads (malleolar atleast) were thick so they took up space in my skate.

I just bought a pair of new, old stock Vapor XXXX skates. I like to keep them really tight because I have a difficult right heel (hard to get a good lock), but after skating on them only a few times, I too am starting to get pain on the medial malleolus bone. I'm giving my ankles a week's rest and in the meantime, what I'm trying to do with the skate is locate the point on the inside quarter panel where my medial malleolus hits and then use my hands to repeatedly flex/crease/wrap that part of the quarter panel so that when I tie my laces up, the quarter panel will have more of a "wrapping" affect around my inner ankle, as it should, rather than just pulling the hard quarter panel plastic perpendicularly against my medial malleolus. I did that today and then tied up my skates really tight so that it will hold in that position. This is my theory and plan. :biggrin:

Sure, I could re-bake the boot, or heat the area up with a heat gun and then put them on, but this is quicker and I'm lazy. Yeah, this may break down my boot in this area prematurely a bit, but I'm willing to suffer that in exchange for well fitting skates. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, I still have that pain. The padding on the inside panel doesn't seem to be enough for my medial malleolus bone. I think I'll try to make some kind of padding for my bone myself. Some home made padded socks for that bone. I would buy the Bunga lace bite protector and turn it sideways, as mentioned before, but I don't like that the company won't let you return them if they don't even fit well when testing and unused.

They are stretchy and fit really isn't a problem. And they work. I get not liking a company - there are plenty I won't do business with - but Bunga has been fine and it really is the easy and effective solution for this problem.

Just an update, I bought a pair of the large (4") round gel bungapads, and they solved the issue, at least for now they have. I'll post again if the pain comes back.
