Local anesthetic

I broke my baby toe last week and now that the major pain has subsided there is just a constant dull ache that is aggravated when I wear any footwear that contacts the side of my toe. Skates tend to do exactly that with little give in the toe (compared to shoes) and I was wondering if anyone knows of an over the counter spray or topical solution that would effectively numb my toe for an hour or so. I'm in Canada so Canadian products would be preferred if anyone has any experience with this.

It's called Ice cubes. get a bucket full of embefore you go to your game, maybe let the foot sit in there for 2-3 hours, and your toell be numb

So, just a word of caution. If you leave your foot, or any appendage for that matter, in a bucket of ice for "2-3" hours I promise you will have other things to worry about than just your foot feeling numb. There is a reason why Medical Doctors around the world should be consulted for anything related to "stubborn pain management". Even though your phalanges are small bones, they do take some time to heal (also take into account your age), not to mention the edema and irritation in the tissue (ligaments and tendons) and joint capsule itself which in and of itself will cause discomfort. If you were to freeze the injury for that length of time you would cut off blood flow so much so that it would only lengthen the time to heal the actual injury as well as cause potentially more swelling when your foot starts to heat back up and more blood begines to flow back into the area. There is a reason why they tell you to ice for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. And a week into the injury is too far along for ice to have any effect.

My opinion is that you are too eager to get back on the ice. I think you should rest it for another week or two and if at that point you are still having pain, consult your doctor.

Damnit. I sort of knew more time off was the answer. So playing hockey has caused me to miss more hockey? I'm depressed. <_<

I was overexaggerating as always. I know that freezing your foot can make it fall off, right? Cuz everything dies in it? Just be lucky I'm not a doctor

Because it is only ice, your foot will not fall off. However what will happen is that your immersed tissues will because very cold. With this cold, you will cut off blood flow as well as make O2 exchange a little less efficient, which is basically why your foot turns blue. I wont get into the biochem. problems that will also result because it is less important. What will happen however is your muscles will freeze up…..your will pretty much cramp up and be unable to move your foot until it is sufficiently warmed up. You actually risk injuring it even more if you use a muscle which has been frozen.

What you are thinking of, frost bite will not happen because it is in ice which will eventually melt and will never get to a temperature where it will do any actual long lasting damage….unless you tear the hell out of your muscles after they have soaked in ice for that length of time.

I think I am going to forgo the ice water cure and just skip right ahead not blocking shots in shinny for chrissakes! Although, I think I saved one with my left foot keeping the score around 11-10 (playing with the nets turned around no less). I'm such a loser.
