How not to run up the score

Recommended Posts

What we used to do on my old team was practice certain plays. We had a dry-erase rink board behind each bench, so we would draw up offensive zone plays. If we did not execute the play properly, we would pass the puck back to the defense and reset the play. If we scored on that play, we would automatically come off the ice and draw up a second play. We would not allow the same play twice. It was a ton of fun, and in many cases, the goalie on the other team knew what we were doing and was happy to be challenged. In our league, every goalie is VERY good and has played at very competitive levels.

So, two years ago, when I switched to the team that sucked...I used to chat with the high level teams and they would do it against us. I loved it because it challenged me individually to figure out the play, and try to prevent them from scoring on it. For competitive players it was a great way to keep us all engaged.

I hate mercy rules... we're not 10, we can handle brutal defeat.

I think its done to help protect players, things tend to get out of hand when you're getting blown out by 8 + goals.

IMO shit only gets out of hand if the team who is up by 8+ goals are being d-bags about it.

Yeah and thats the problem in my league. We have like 3 AIHL teams that call my rink home so a lot of the players are in leagues that they should not be in so when games get out of hand it turns into a skills comp and it gets ugly.

Last night the team we played against had a former AHL player out to skate with them. We lost 8-2

The guy had 1 goal and 7 assists.

It's a C league.
