Passing problem

Recommended Posts

Hey I think I have a problem but i'm not sure. Whenever I catch passes and then release them, occasionally the puck seems to go past the heel and "under my stick". Could this be that I need a different lie? I currently use a Tkachuk (5 lie)...Any help on this or what I CAN do to prevent this?

Do you use tape on your blade? Dont you play roller, so perhaps the puck slides of the glossy blade without tape?

Sounds like you need to drop your bottom hand and cup the puck a little more when receiving I have a shocking problem every now and then where I don't cup a pass properly and it spills forward for an easy defensive pick up. Get yourself a very "Bouncy" puck and practice your receiving against a wall. I used to have a Millenium Pro Puck, man that sucker was bouncy x10! even if you are only a feet or two from the wall snap it hard and you will see your receiving skills picking up.

I agree try using a shorter stick. I chop my stick a bout 1 and half inches more than is recommended by the old blade toe to the chin measure. I have done so for 5 years now and I reckon I get the best feel from it puckhandling and shooting. That and my blades seem to wear even as well which is a good thing Im told.

Maybe you need to either lower your stance or lower your top hand more so your blade sits flatter on the ice. If you're receiving passes too close to your feet, maybe catch them further out in front, or go with the shorter stick to catch the passes closer to your feet without losing the puck under the heel.

I had a similar problem....which was caused by me panicking when I was receiving a long pass especially when I was headmanning and there are 2 defenseman at the ready to check only a few paces infront.

Best way to get used to having the puck at a short distance is tip to heeling the puck to your feet but use your stick NOT your feet once the puck is in range to control it. Keep doing this over and over untilk your bottom hand slips down to the sam spot everytime and the blade is flat in unison.

If your confused let me know, I'll try and explain it clearer as I know with my Juniors my explainations sometimes need elaboration.

Go to a 5.5 or higher lie, that should resolve the problem. No need to make drastic changes like stick length at first. Blades are cheap and is an easy first step in testing.

If the puck is actually sliding "under" the heel of your stick, then as Chadd suggests it's possibly a problem with too flat a lie.

Another thing that can cause this is recieving the pass too far forward and trying to relay it from that position. This is very common for players who learned to play hockey with a ball(do not know if this applies to you), because cupping the ball would tend to make the blade roll over it. Maybe try recieveing the pass farther back in your stance. This will give you a longer "stroke" in your passing and more control.

Check the tape wear on the blade. If most of the wear is in the mid to toe area then you need a blade with a higher lie.
