Ovi Pro Stock Curves - available at LHS?

Recommended Posts

So here is the story.....I was at Ice Level Sports in Richmond, B.C. today, and saw a rack full of CCM U+CL sticks. When I looked closer, I noticed some that looked an awful lot like they might be Ovechkin pro stocks. So I inquired, and they said that they were indeed Ovi pro stocks. Although they were painted like a U+CL, they were definitely NOT retail U+CL sticks - they were much heavier than a U+CL (they actually seem closer to a Dolo weight-wise), and most of the shaft is a regular "grip" rather than the funky textured stuff they use on the U+CL's. There is a blade pattern number stamped on the shaft (along with a "A1T") and a legend that says the stick is a pro stock. It is stamped "Ovi-8" in the name place where CCM usually puts a sticker with the last name of the relevant retail player pattern. All of them were listed as Regular 85 flex, but they seemed a bit more flexy than that. And I think they were a little longer than the regular sticks (which would explain why it seemed more whippy than listed).

But here is the very interesting thing.....I can't guarantee it, but I'm 99% sure that they had them in both left and right, and the stick came with the usual 30 day warranty. Which implies that they aren't Ovi's true pro stocks.

So a couple of questions:

1. Any thoughts on what the stick might really be, since it definitely isn't a retail U+CL (or even a regular U+)?

2. Is it possible that CCM is starting to stealthly sell retail versions of Ovi's real stick under the guise of it being a "pro stock"? The fact that I'm pretty sure they had both left and right-handed versions baffles me and makes me wonder if they've noticed a demand for Ovi "pro stocks" that they want to fill. That would also explain why they felt the need to include a legend on the shaft that says "This is a pro stock", since that would imply they knew it would be sold at retail because it wouldn't be necessary to include on the stick of the actual pro for whom it was made.

In any event, I bought one and it is a beautiful curve. I can't wait to take it on the ice and hit the rafters with my first shot.

I think they had 5 or 6 more of them in the store.

He posted pictures of the name plate area. No CCM is not "stealthly" releasing Ovi Pro Stocks. They are just his pro stocks. Ovi's curve is used by a few pros in both handedness, which could explain the LH & RH version.

That's what I was thinking. I saw a bunch of Sherwood Stastny sticks in left and right a couple years back with a Coffey curve on them, before they were putting his name on sticks. That shop did an order of custom sticks with that name and curve.

My LHS has both LH and RH U+ CL's. I'm thinking CCM is offering this for retail because Ovi is so popular and the curve alone will sell sticks.

Doesn't the "A1T" mean that it's a Reebok 10k? I have a prostock 10k shaft and that's what it's labeled. Also, I believe the Ovi prostocks that were being sold by TSR a while back (ones that DolomaticDangles posted a pic of) were thought to be 10k's.
