Question about skate stiffness/quality.

Recommended Posts

I just started playing again (in May) after a 17-year hiatus. I'm currently skating in the Bauer Supreme Custom 1000's I bought in 1993, but they are really floppy and the leather is breaking down. (No Surprise) I went to my LHS and tried on a bunch of skates and found the Vapors felt the best to me, but I'm not sure what 'level' skate to get. I've heard people tell others not to get really high-end skates unless they really skate hard or weigh alot, because they may be too stiff. For financial reasons, I'm not really considering anything above the X:40-- would anyone here think the X:40 might be too much skate for someone who plays beer league once or twice a week? Should I just get the 20's or 30's, or is the 'too much skate' argument reserved for the X60s, One95's and the like?

I don't see anything wrong going with the X:40 for your beer league. It is really all a matter of what you feel you're getting out of your skate, IMO. The higher level skates will be stiffer but that doesn't necessarily mean it is too much skate, you could be someone who needs/prefers a stiffer boot.

For what it is worth, I know plenty of beer leaguers sporting X:60's, One95's and the like. It is all what you feel works for you and you can justify spending to the Mrs.

I bought the X:60 LE's because I wanted the all black skate. Otherwise, I would have gone with the X:40's in a heartbeat. Cost much less and I've also heard that they're actually lighter. I probably could have used a more flexible boot as I'm only 5'7" and 135 lbs.

Mid level skates today are better than ever before. That said, the only way a skate will be "too much" for you is if you don't have the size/strength to take a full stride. Plus, the bigger you are, the more likely you are to need a mid to upper level skate as the lower models are more likely to break down.

I play once, sometimes twice a week in an adult league & I love my X:40s. I did some research online & when I went to try stuff on at my LHS they fit me the best & were in the price range that I wanted to spend on skates (I converted to ice after years of only playing inline). I broke down a cheap pair of inline skates in less than 2 years & significantly upgraded with my second pair so I am hoping to avoid that same situation by having purchased the X:40s instead of a cheaper model to start with (I did inquire about the X:50s & 60s, but the salesman, who was a player himself, said that it probably wasn't worth it for someone who was just starting ice & playing a couple times a week - I appreciated his honesty & his lack of trying to convince me to spend more money...which probably wouldn't have worked anyway). Since they're in your budget & they fit well, I'd say go for it.

If I were you Id go to your LHS and try on some different types of skates. I would personally reccomend the RBK 7k or 8k Pumps. A little bit cheaper than the X:40's but they are still great skates. I play AAA hockey and they work perfectly for me.

I agree with most on here. I do not believe that the X:40 is too much skate, and if they fit well would probably be a good choice.
