New "Owen Sound Attack" donuts on gameday at Tim Horton's. What a great idea!

Owen Sound battered by 'Attack Donut'

By Sunaya Sapurji

We have all heard about the coffee wars brewing between Canada's rival java giants, but now Tim Hortons has taken this battle to a new level by unveiling a secret weapon:

The "Attack Donut."

Tim Hortons has joined forces with the Ontario Hockey League's Owen Sound Attack to offer a limited edition - eat 'em while you got 'em - run of doughy goodness in local stores only available on game day.

The Attack Donut represents the official colours of the team -- white, brown, yellow and red sprinkles -- delicately set on a vanilla dip.

So, if you're going to have your insides assaulted by a doughnut, this is the one for you.

"It's pretty scary the Attack Donut," said Owen Sound captain Garrett Wilson. "It's definitely going to catch the eye of a lot of customers."

He says this doughnut is just as likely to strike fear into opponents as it is your arteries.

"We've got bragging rights around the league with this doughnut," said the fourth-round pick of the Florida Panthers in 2009. "It's definitely a huge deal."

Yes. A huge, delicious deal.

Wilson and Colorado Avalanche first-round pick (17th overall in 2010) Joey Hishon were on hand at the official unveiling of the doughnut on Thursday morning at a local Tim Hortons along with store owner Fay Harshman, who is also part-owner of the hockey team.

Wilson said he was excited about spreading the news about his new tasty teammate, especially since all proceeds from the sale of Attack Donut are going to help Owen Sound Minor Hockey.

"They're pretty good," said Wilson. "I'm pretty proud. When I go into a Tim Hortons now I can buy one and tell my friends back home (in Elmvale, Ont.) about the Attack Donut."

But, according to the 19-year-old, the Attack Donut isn't really considered the breakfast -- or even the snack-- of champions.

"It's not really recommended," said Wilson of high-caliber athletes eating the deep-fried treats. "But both Joey Hishon and I enjoy the odd doughnut, so we were quick to volunteer for this player appearance.

"The body-fat percentage might go up a bit throughout the year."

But just when you think the Attack are the first junior hockey team to unveil an official doughnut, they're not. Teaming up with tasty treats is becoming common in the CHL. The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings had their own crowning glory in May during the Memorial Cup in Brandon, Man.

There a local Tim Hortons showed their support by making the donuts featuring the Wheaties colours of black, gold and white -- identical to the doughnuts a local Tim Hortons put out in Sarnia, Ont., for the OHL's Sarnia Sting.

But, there was one big difference.

"It wasn't officially authorized," said Sting director of marketing, Mark Glavin. "I went into the (Tim Hortons) store and saw them in there."

Unlike Sarnia's bootleg doughnut campaign, the Attack are fully supporting this venture.

"It might have to be a new superstition for me," said Wilson of eating the Attack Donut as a pre-game meal. "I might have to do it before every game now."

Hey mike, we do have the Spitfire donut at the WFCU timmys.

The Tim Hortons' at Wyandotte & St. Louis has had a Spitfires donut for the last 2 seasons. Not sure how many,if any, other TH in the Windsor area has them. They are not always available though. It's a good promo though. TH has been associated with minor hockey forever it seems, and having a team the calibre of the Spitfires at least, helps get their name out there for those who might be sitting on the fence in terms of going to a game, or buying a donut..... Plus the Spitfires do the camp day fundraisers at a lot of the local Tim Horton's each year too.

I wonder if Windsor will sell a "rebuild" donut this year....... ;)
