Henrik Lundqvist's Request

Recommended Posts

"Asked about Henrik Lundqvist, Martin Biron said he was amazed at how New York's franchise player sharpens his skates. Lundqvist asks for specific work on his inside edges, because he likes to play low and uses the T-push method Roberto Luongo is trying this season. His style of sharpening is unusual in North America, but common in Sweden."

Anyone with familiarity know what type of cut he's specifically asking for? Just interested..

the leafs vs rangers game they mentioned he likes his inside edge to be really uhhh high? basically his inside edge sticks out more than the outside so its really lopsided, they mentioned belfour did it too, and they also mentioned lundqvist only sharpens his skates like 2-4 times a season, so whatever works for him i guess

I wouldn't say its terribly popular in Sweden, but you can definitely see it around. One thing I did notice is goaltenders have extremely sharpened skates in Sweden, vs. the formerly popular style of being rather flat. This way they can move from post to post very quickly.

When I was at the Rangers practice facility I saw that Lundqvist had his own skate sharpening jig and it clearly said "DO NOT TOUCH". I asked the equipment manager what that was all about and he said Lundqvist pretty much gets his skates sharpened on a angle. So what is completely wrong to most of us is right for him. Giving him that extreme angle allows him to push off from side to side on that one edge.

Yes, his inside edge is much higher than the outside. I've talked to the EQM of the Hartford Wolfpack and for those of you that are familiar with the Blackstone Edge Level, his inside edge is 3 lines above the level line. And Yeah, the EQM for the Rangers does bring along another jig just for Lundqvist's skates only.
