i need help finding a new skate

Recommended Posts

hi all!

after reading a lot of posts i decided to start my first topic.

i need new icehockeyskates, as my old ones are about to fall appart. unfortunately i have trouble finding the right fit. i tried on all the skates i could in my citys' stores.

i quess i've got wide feet. especially the forefoot is wide. splayed flat foot - i wear arch supporting insoles in my normal "street-shoes"

a low arch

and narrow heel

am i right? pictures of my foot:

http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l567/boldp12/IMG_0233.jpg

what i was able to try on:

ccm u+ (D with) hurt on the outside of my middle foot; too much volume in the heel area; toe-box/toe-cap size seemed fine; not enough hold above the ankle - feld a bit wobbly

rbk (D with; E isn't avaible in my area) fitted fine, heel was locked with pumped PUMP; too narrow toe-box - not enough room for the left pinky toe

bauer flexlight (EE with) nice toe-box, but felt too roomy overall. and too expensive - 4.0 pro cost 540 € in my shop which is about 740 US$

bauer vapor (EE with) toe-box a little tight; but ok i think; maybe just a little roomy for the middle-foot-area (D with was too tight there); could be tighter above the ankle; the heel is too wide - means, when i stand up on my tiptoes (shoes propperly laced) i feel my heel moving a littl up and down. do you think this problem can be solved through heat-molding??

bauer supreme one80 (EE) has the best fit so far. heel is superbly locked; tight, but snug on the middle-foot; toe-box is the issue here! there is not enough room for the (left) pinky toe (i mean the smallest toe). the pinky toe is pushed heavily against the toe next to it. when i go halfe a size up to a 7 lenght the pressure on the pinky-toe is reduced, but still there and I'm not sure, if i want to buy a skate half a number bigger (my big toe still feathers a tiny bit against the end of the skate while standing)

the toe-problem occurs on the end of the toe-box (where the toe-box is sewed on the boot). i've read in another topic, that you can't punch this area out. is that true? any ideas how to widen the toe-box? will the breaking in process create more space for my pinky-toe?

the day after tomorrow i'll try the easton EQ5 skates on.

i hope you guys can help my out. maybe you could recommend a skate, that fits my foot type

thanks for your time and i apologize for any mistakes i may have made. i learned english at school ;)

bye

chris

I can't pick out a skate for you, but I have similar feet and I've always used Bauer in EE width. The Bauer Vapors have a little bit of a bump for an arch, and it will take some getting used to, but your feet will adapt the more you skate in them. I've also heard that Eastons are pretty flat but I've never worn Easton skates, and couldn't advise you one way or the other.

I CAN tell you to AVOID CCM. Wicked high arch and a narrow forefoot.

If you can spare the cheeze (I couldn't) I'd recommend Graf's because they are designed to adapt to almost any foot sole shape. If you have the correct size, Grafs will fit you after a bake or a break in.

If you don't have Graf money, I'd recommend Bauer EE's with aftermarket insoles (superfeet).

I'm not a skate fitting specialist, and my Bauer Vapor x15's with x60 footbeds still hurt my arches a little bit, but that's pretty normal for me, and after a few weeks of skating 3-4 times a week the arches are starting to break down and my feet are much more used to them.

Then again I'm a Bauer gear whore, have been for some 15 years, so what do I know? I'm biased. If you can afford em, get Graf's. If you want to save some money, get a low-mid level Bauer Supreme or Vapor in EE. Don't get anything without trying on everything, LOL. Good luck!

What were you wearing before? That would help but really whats best is simply trying skates on.

I wore ccm super tacks 652 before. but i don't know, if this is meaningful, because i bought them 1 size too big to give my feet room for growing, which they never did ^^

Since you tried on the Supreme one80's and liked them, they're a good choice. Try on the Eastons like you said, and ask your pro shop guy about Graf's. I can almost guarantee my next pair of skates will be Graf, and I'm a Bauer junkie.

The entire Bauer line is pretty great in my opinion, the supremes will be stiffer and offer more overall support, the Vapors are a little bit softer and flexy-er. Hope you find what you're looking for. Being flat footed, I'd like to know what you decide on and how they work out for you. Regardless your feet WILL have to adapt to the skate a little, breaking in will only do so much.

Id forget about Eastons. They typically run narrow. Your best bet might be to just get a set of custom skates made. Its going to be more expensive, but its also going to give you the best fit.

so from the sounds of it, you have a narrow heel, wide forefoot, low volume, flat foot. to me, it sounds like you'd fit real well into an easton stealth series skate, ie S12/S17. when i had my s12's, that's exactly how they fit. surprisingly wide in the forefoot, tight in the heel, relatively low volume and almost no arch support...that's why i ended up in x60's.

i remember reading that the new eq line has a bit higher volume and fits wider in the heel than the current stealth.

I would recommend Eastons as well. I also have flat feet and have had issues with heel slippage and the S17 is the best fitting skate I've skated on so far. The ankle/heel lock works really well and the toe box is wider than other brands in normal width. The only problem for me is that I need to have them punched out but can't with the composite boot.

Definitely the Easton Stealth series (S15 series and newer S17 series) or the older Synergy series (older 1500 series or newer SE16 series, not the newest EQ series however). Your foot is similar to mine and Easton has the best heel lock for narrow ankles out of any brand. Aside from the Eastons, the Supreme series is your next best bet

You and I have a similar foot, I've been wearing MLX for nearly 2 years now, with very little difficulty in fit. Any trouble areas i had were easily fixed. SHipping them overseas is another issue.

I would've suggested the Bauer Supreme series to you, as it fit me well in the past. Is there anywhere near you to try a wide Graf?

I would definitely recommend the Easton Stealth S17/S12.

I loved the S17 because I have a super narrow flat feet and the heel lock felt incredible. Prior, I was skating in the Easton Synergy 1500 and the heel was much wider which gave me slippage issue. The problem I had with the S17 was the forefoot area really opened up and widened. That was way too much space for me, but sounds perfect for you! Give them a try if you can like everyone has said!

thank you for all the fast and constructive replies!

i tried the supreme one80 again. this time half a size bigger in 7 EE (so that my big toe is just feathering against the end when i'm standing up straight). By the way my running shoes are size US 9. feels better for my little toe! BUT after half an hour walking around the store, walking on tip-toe, etc. it hurts where the tongue of the skate meets the ankle. i think the tongue is to expanded in the area of the ankle for me. do you think it's possible to cut the sides of the tongue, that it doesn't touch my ankle anymore???

tried the graf g5: toe-box is big enough, but they're too wide in the heel area

the guy in the store could get me some supra 709. do you think they could fit?

it sounds like the easton S17 could be a good fit. problem is, i can only try on the S9 (s17 aren't avaible in my citys' stores). Do the S9 and S17 have the same fit???

i can only buy S17 online.

The 709 has a really wide heel, wider than any 705 so probably wouldn't bother with getting the 709. Try the g70/670/570 which has a narrower heel.

ahh u got the same problem as mine. however i didn't cut the part of the tongue. i just shave it to make it thin enough to not making any pressure on my ankle. well, it worked for me. but i think if you search, there're topics about tongue problem with pics included..

I would also try on Grafs. Grafs are wide for your toes, have a great feel and comfort.

Dont confuse him. Not all Grafs are fit similarily.

Graf 703/G3 Narrower, low volume

Graf G70 Wider, lots of volume, narrower heel

Graf 709 Wider, lots of volume, wide heel

Etc and so on.

Maybe he could try a Graf G35 in a wide. I've yet to try on the new Easton skates, but in my experience they're more for a shallower, yet wider foot and narrow heel. You'll have to try them on.

You can also try the Graf skates in a wide and see how that works and fits your toes too

I have both the G35 and S17 and I can say that they are nothing alike. It is a low cut design and doesn't offer nearly the same amount of ankle support as the S17. Also my heel slips out of it where it is held in perfectly with the S17. It is a higher volume boot and might work but I would keep this in mind if you are considering Grafs.

Sorry to highjack the thread, but I am also in the market for a new pair of skates. I am currently in a pair of 2001 Easton Ultra lites (7.5) that are awesome skates but a bit too small now. Hear is my question; Do the EQ5's fit simmilar to the Stealth line?? I fit great in a size 7.5 in the X60's, but I was about an 8.5 in the S17's and the fit was terrible in comparision to the Eastons Im skating in currently. Do the EQ5's fit like a more traditional(older model Easton) skate??

No idea about the Ultra lites, but the EQ series fits a wider foot in general, completely different from the previous Synergy series (SE16 down) and Stealth series (S17 down and S15 down)
