need to replace shin guards

Recommended Posts

I am just returning to hockey after a 6 year layoff and some of the old equipment hasn't aged well. I currently have some jofa 8090 shins that are cracked on one knee cap and I would like to find a less bulky pad. I love the protection that the jofa's offer, but I would like to find something that is a bit smaller with a similar level of protection. Any suggestions?

I personally like the Vapor series from Bauer. Check out the X:60's. They are light, compact and protective.

reebok 8k. verry good pad. streamlined , compared to the 10k. And i think there on clearance right now , on alot of sites , for around 60 or 70 bucks.

I like my Reeboks but they aren't exactly streamlined, although I'm not sure what advantage that would give. The One75/One80 shins are pretty solid for the money in terms of being slimmer.

I haven't used the X60's, but I did try them on and they're slim, light, seem protective and the strap system really locks you in. Personally, I use the Warrior Projekts and they're light, slim, protective and very comfortable. I've also read that the Easton ST16 are on the narrower side, but have no experience with them. I'd go into a shop with good selection and try on as many as you can.

when i tried the 8k , 10k and 6k, the 8k seemed to have less bulk. maybe because of the smaller calf wrap. But your right , its not exactly streamlined . Maybe just a bit more so than the 6 or 10.

I'm in X:30s and really like them, if that helps.

Yep, it's just the calf wrap that's smaller (way too small IMO), the front shell is the same size on all three.

haha . its what made me go with the 8k over the 10 or 6. not a big fan of the big calf wrap

You're not going to find 8090 levels of protection in a smaller pad.

Not even remotely close to the same level of protection

my CCM Tacks 652's are absolute tanks, and they're not even top-of-the-line...if you can find them on closeout somewhere, grab a pair :)

Got some 8k beautiful but good crap they are. I was sick and tired to scout around for some jofa (on ebay when you find one piece, prices are crazy and everyone is one them). And really need some, so went to the 1st LHS and got what they have. 8k is supposed to be the reebok "bauer pro series". Simple design.

They might work for you though, I have quite big calf.

But to me, there is absolutely nothing new on them, you still have the JDP, hyperX, same shell design (arches), ..

The strapping system doesn't work for me (the upper strap is too low, i feel like the knee portion is loose), they are not deep enough (there's like a big empty space between the shell and the actual inner liner), their comfort base is made for slim knee, I still didn't get why on earth they but this little tongue on the very top that basically just mess with my socks all the time. The liner has nothing special, surprisingly not even a bit of a grip. Basically I don't feel comfortable in them.

80 dollars for that, in the end when I saw those SG9070 for 70dollars on auction it would have been a better bang for me money.

It's the first time the line-up is up side down. 4k and 6k are respectively better shit than 8k and 10k

I hope the plastic of the shell is still top-notch quality like on the old jofa 8000 and 9000 series, that never cracks. I hope after an extended break in period (after this season  ) I'll get used to them.

outcome : If you wanna go for rbk KFS 2010 shin guards, go for the 6k (if you mind the calf protection and better lock of your leg, the liner is a bit more supportive) or 4k (if you want something less bulky, minimal calf protection, thinner straps which I personally like). They both feel nice on the leg.

I really like the Bauer Pro Series. Simple and business like and very protective. I also tried the Warrior Projekts and didnt really care for them. The Projekts sat on top of my leg where with the Bauers my leg fit in deeply and were cradled by the shin guard.

I used to use the new projekt pad. The comfort is really nice but for me, the protection was awfulll. Killed my knees every time something touched them. Went back to my beat up old rbk/jofa 7Ks.

I haven't tried the Bauer Pro series, but currently use the Projekts and find that they fit deeper than my old Bauer One90 shins. They can move a little on me if I don't tape them well (but that could be said of the One90s and most other shins I've used - the only exception being the Nike V14 pads), but they're very comfortable and I haven't felt any slashes, shots or falls so I've been happy with the protection.

I picked up a pair of Mission Fuel 110's for $25 and have taken several shots with them and really like them. Because they're a bit older and used, I'll have to modify the straps a bit because some of the elastic is stretched out.

I have a pair of Warrior Method shins waiting to be tried out, but they definitely don't have the protection the Fuel's do.
