Modifying 8k Shoulders

Recommended Posts

I picked up a pair of the old RBK 8k shoulders which are super comfortable but have the huge shoulder caps (these are the 2005 models I believe). I would like to replace them with smaller caps but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of material to attached the replacements to. I don't want to start cutting to find out the construction it too integrated to make this an easy swap so I'm wondering if anyone has done something similar and what the success was?

I have a pair of 8k shoulder pads, I think they are 2008 model, look just like this

Yes, the caps are a little large, but why would you be bothered by that? If anything, they will protect you! and if anything else they will make you look bigger, maybe the other guy will get out of your way when he sees you coming? I haven't worn mine yet as I was more concerned with the lack of rib protection on the back (I'm going to add some extra foam around the ribs on the back. On occasion I get cross stick checked in the back by dirty players) I'll do this mod very soon, as my old bauer flak shoulders have started falling apart!

Cheers!

See where your going man, but with the old Jofa/Rbk line with the whole "traditional fit" shoulder caps, it's very very big. I had the 7500 which I'd say is almost as big if not as big as those. I just bought new ones. For me, it was partly price, and for other players. It's hard plastic, their huge, they definitely hurt. Even if the bigger players get out of my way, I'd hate to be the cause of any injury.

I have the exact same model. I picked up a pair of the 6k fitlights on ebay for like 20 bucks and switched out the caps. I know Patrick Kane has the Jofa version with Bauer caps. You could most likely put whatever caps you wanted on there with very little problem. It's just a matter of stitching them in the right place. As far as removing the old caps all you might have to cut is the stitching holding them on. I was able to remove mine without cutting anything though. You just have to get a fairly large needle or a seam ripper to get down in there to pull the threads out. An awl (I think that's how it's spelled) would be helpful as far as stitching the new caps on. I also took the adjustable bicep straps and reaplaced the ones on mine so I could adjust them to fit better with my elbow pads. Pretty simple too, just needed an upholstry needle. I don't have any pics at the moment, but if you'd like to see I could get them for ya.

Took them to the local cobbler (who is famous in my area for customizing hockey gear) and had him put Sherwood classic caps on these. I will post pics when I get a chance.

Did you buy a pair of sherwood pads for the shoulder caps or did they sell them separately?

As previously posted, I recommend you don't go with no caps at all because in this game it's very easy to get a shoulder injury if you happen to fall awkwardly on the ice, or against the boards, in feverish action during play. You also occassionaly get one of those players who thinks he's in the seventh game of a Stanley Cup final as well and belts you into the boards or spills you over the ice. Personally I would just leave them alone if you can't get them replaced and resewn on. Only draw back is your look a little beefer than some of the other players( but then again it may be a deterent so they'll leave you alone) but at least you have superior protection. I had a pair or 8900's and was fortunate enough to be able to switch with my older son for a pair of Bauer 1/90's. He doesn't seem to mind the larger caps and wears them for every game he plays and I still have good protection with more low profile caps so it worked out very nice.

Here is the final result. Took them to a local cobbler. Actually, the finished product is three different pads combined. I had had the caps from my Sherwood classics sewn onto an old pair of Franklin pads (that is the red foam material the caps are sewn onto. I then cut that combination off the Franklins and had the cobbler replace the RBK caps with these which was necessary since he needed some material to sew onto the RBK pads. Sure it's not pretty but it is just the perfect amount of shoulder coverage for the non-contact low level I play.

Here are pics of the finished product and a catalogue shot showing the originals.Total cost for the new cap attachment-$10.

Nice work. I've got the same shoulder pads and have considered doing something similar. Is it possible to get a shot of the pads with the caps flipped up to show where it was stitched?

Sure. I will get one up as soon as possible. It's not as pretty underneath btw.
