Total One Lace Bite Issue!

Recommended Posts

Just got myself some brand new TotalOnes! LOVE the skate, super light and by far the most comforatble boot I have ever had on my foot. Feels almost like a shoe! ... BUT it's the same old lace bite story. I've skated in them 2 or 3 times, now I have CRIPPLING LB issues! Although, it doesn't seem to be the "traditional" place. It's above my ankle, more on my shin bone, right at the top set of eyelets. Anyone ever have lace bite in this area? Any solutions? I know about the lace bite guards, foam inserts, cutting up a mouse pad, but if you spend $800+ on skates, they should be perfect from the start. I've also been told to not tie up the top laces, which solves the lace bite issue, but makes it an unnatural skating experience for myself. It just feels horrible. I'm meeting with a Bauer Rep to discuss the possiblilty of having custom tongues thrown in. Any reccomendations on tongues? Anyone ever have experience with Bauer replacement tongues/types?

Suggest you try skating in them more. They might be high end skates but they won't be perfect from the start, you should allow time for it to break in.

It could be your foot thats too fat for the boot, have you tried doing the pencil test?

If the lace bite is still bugging you, you could try loosening up the lacing on the top eyelet instead of not lacing at all.

Yup. I passed the "pencil test". And I still get the LB with a loosened top lace.

How often do you skate? How much do you weigh? What tongue insert stiffness are you using? What skate/skates are you coming out of? More info will give us a better picture of what might be causing your problems.

I'm roughly 165lbs. Coming out of a mid-line Vapor skate and I'm using the mid-stiff flex. I found all the other flex way too stiff!

If they don't fit, it really doesn't matter how much you spent on them. You aren't getting flex out of the boot and it's the stiffness causing the problem. Replacing the tongues is a temporary solution at best.

Actually a number of us do but it's only a half assed solution to the problem.

So what do you suggest? I have these $800 skates that give me horrible lace bite. The store is going to pay for me to get "upgraded" tongues. You say that the skate itself is the issue (too stiff/no flex). I can't return the skates. Where do I go from here? Please help!

Sell them and buy skates that do fit. You messed up when you bought them, throwing more money at them isn't going to change the fit.

My problem wasn't lace bite but more of the top of the tongue not covering my ankle bone and the lace itself was digging into the ankle bone on both feet. Easy fix was just to add some thicker felt to that part of the tongue and I have been good to go since

I learned my lesson from a like situation after around two weeks with ONE90s, and those two weeks initiated awful, chronic aggravating tendinitis. Get new skates, it's a tough pill, but get new skates.

As hard as it is to "swallow"....sell them and get skates that fit you better.....There's a reason there are many pr's of Total ones for sale, that are "like new"....They didn't work for that person. Good luck, but I totally agree, keep them as close to stock as you can, and sell them!

I think you should skate a bit longer in your skates before you decide you need to change them or sell them. I switched to these out of Vapor XXXX's and it took me about 6 ice times to get used to. I had the same issue on my left ankle. I think its from the Total One's being closer fitting than my Vapor XXXX's. I have a hard bump formed where it was hurting on the ankle and the the pain has stopped. You should tough it out for a few more Ice times, and if they still don't work for you, find different skates.

So... met with the Bauer Rep yesterday. He's dumb founded. He thought for sure I was gunna be some punk kid who didn't know hockey/couldn't tie a skate properly. He thought for sure coming to meet me it was going to be an easy solve by just ordering a new tongue for me. He's recommended that we start small; mouse pad in my sock, lace bite socks (stable 26 or something), then the last ditch effort will be putting a One95 tongue into my skates. I know everyone keeps telling me to SELL SELL SELL. Any final thoughts from anyone? Bauer "might" be willing to take the blame (so says the rep) and could get me out of the TotalONE. But what skate can I get myself into. I thought the new x:60 sucked. The TotalONES fit the best for boot. And the new CCM CL apparently fit AWESOME, but only once you heat them up and my LHS wont let me heat the skates until I purchase them. I've had EVERY skate on in the store. Wasn't a fan of Grafs and RBK felt too bulky. The store wouldn't let me try on an S17 due to reliability issues (and from what I've read online, durability seems to be an issue, so probably not the skate for me)

Can't believe you named the rep a dumb whatever...It's more than generous, that he took his time for your personal fitting problems! Did he only come bc of you, or did he have a date with your LHS, just curious...for me it sounds like it just has to be a high end skate at any price for you. x60 sucks...cl is awesome..why? Maybe you love the skate, but obviously it doesn't love you...like Chadd said, a new tongue won't help that much and bc the TO is to stiff for you, either X60 or CL wouldn't be a solution. I would go with a softer skate for sure, and if you just don't like some 'mid levels' or 'lower numbers on them', I'd probably take a fitted Graf, softer and also gives you some 'exclusiveness', fan or not. I feel sorry for your money, but try to get a deal with your LHS, I am sure, they will be glad too, when this story comes to an end...

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a Graf boot that wouldn't fit your foot. Don't be fooled by what you think your foot will fit into versus trying on every model. I was blown away that the Graf's I ended up with (G35X) were nowhere near what I thought I'd wear within their product line. Having an open mind and trying on every model in the store (Bauer's, CCM's, Reebok's too) helped...and I did have to sell my old skates which was a hard pill to swallow, but worth it now that I have properly fitted skates.

You can get a pretty good idea how the CCM cl will fit without baking. Not like previous U+ boots. They will fit close to the RBI 11k.

Hey frankie56, dumfounded doesn't mean the rep is dumb. Look the word up before you criticize someone for using it.

My dictionary is not handy.

Would dumb, or dumbfounded, be the correct adjective to apply to someone who jumps on the wrong poster?

Sorry couldn't resist.

Sorry frankie56. I was using the mobile version of the site, which I am not used to, and I swear it said your name beside that post. My bad.

I tried on what my LHS recommended... as in the X:60... it was their reccomendation... also, the rep happened to be in the area doing custom skate fits for someone else and it was not I that called the rep, the store was out of ideas and the rep wanted to come see. Anyways, thought this site would be helpful, but has now become a total bash session. The skates weren't bought on impulse, I bought what I felt fit correctly to my foot.

Have fun bashing me some more, guess I'm just a big dumb idiot and know nothing in life cuz I made an error with a purchase.
