Tomas Fleischmann Out for Year

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure if there was an Avs topic in here, but Jeff Marek just said via Twitter Tomas Fleischmann is out for the year due to Pulmonary Embolism. Tough loss for the Avs, and best wishes to a speedy recovery for him. I don't know much about the injury, how serious is it exactly?

It can be life threatening if not treated quickly and properly. Blood thinners and a filter to trap the clot. Not exactly conducive to day to day NHL life

Could this have anything to do with him now playing in a high altitude city like Denver?

I remember a couple of years ago a Steelers player had to have his Spleen removed due to a reaction to the altitude (I believe it may have had something to do with a sickle cell trait he had as well) in Denver.

Either way, hopefully Tomas is able to get through it well and get back to playing at a very high level.

Pulmonary embolism is a clot or other object that obstructs bloodflow to the lungs, resulting in not enough oxygenated blood getting to the rest of the body. As you can imagine, that can be very serious and as mentioned already, could result in death.

They just said he would be on blood thinners and didn't mention anything about an IVC filter. It probably won't be necessary.

Given their treatment decision (not on blood thinners for life), they probably expect this to be a one-time occurrence.

This is probably not because of the altitude.

My friend Jason offered this conspiracy theory... Could the Caps have known about this previously?

Flash had issues flying over the Atlantic in 2008 when some form of clot showed up and he missed significant time... 2 months?

Not sure if they're even related, I know the 2008 incident was effected by the pressure on the plane, but just thought I'd see if anyone else might think similarly. I don't really believe it, but there sure is that possibility.

He had deep-vein thrombosis at the start of last year. I think its highly unlikely that the capitals managed to keep a potentially serious condition hidden from doctors, his agent, fleischmann himself..., and on and on. its more believable that the guy has horrible luck or that god just doesn't like him.

They don't have to keep it from anybody. Professional athletes are sometimes self-inclined to "play through" injuries they shouldn't, and team doctors...I know they probably shouldn't, but I could see them looking the other way while the athlete plays.

The more I think about it, the first clot was not pressure-related. (Also, I misread the replay to my post). Long periods of not moving around (e.g. Trans-Atlantic flight) are a major risk factor for DVT, high pressures not so much. That second PE, I don't know. Maybe he is just hyper-coagulable.

Look at what happened with Alexei Cherepanov

Old topic I know, but.....

Like Nicolus sas, DVT is often caused on long trips because you don't get up and walk around a bunch (think about a large sized human squeezed into a tiny seat sitting there for hours on end). Your knees are bent and that is when circulation is at it's worst in your legs.

As for earlier comments on the blood thinners, it is quite the case that hockey isn't conducive to that. You can't do anything that puts you at risk of getting a bruise while on blood thinners (you could theoretically bleed out; albeit it that a rare and extreme circumstance).

90% of the time nothing comes out of DVT's. The remaining 10% is very unfavorable (pulmonary embolism; VERY large percentage of those lead to death).

Oh, and the swelling associated with DVT can be quite painful.

HE was back in DC getting treatment recently (he was at a couple of Caps playoff games, and they showed him on the screen). From what he was saying then to the people that spoke to him, he should be good to go for next season.

I hope that's the case. I like Flash, didn't fit with the Caps anymore, but still a good 25 goal, 50 point getter in the league, and a nice guy to boot, so I hope he can make a full recovery and continue his career
