Making a shaft gripper

Recommended Posts

I picked up a Z-Bubble from PIAS recently and finally had a chance to try it last night. For some reason, it was so slick that I could hardly keep a grip on it. I don't think anything is wrong with the shaft itself, but it seems as though the Kevlar wrap is slick. Part of the problem might be new gloves, but as soon as I went back to my Ultralite and Easton S7 I had no grip issues.

Is there an easy way to make a shaft grippier, without being sticky or candycaning the shaft? It seems the Ultralite has a clearcoat that provides just enough friction but is not an actual grip coating.

I was thinking of spraying on a matte clearcoat but wasn't sure if that is a good idea.

Any thoughts?

Wow, that stuff looks great. I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks.

PS - I'm pretty sure 'grippier' is not a word, but I went with it anyways.

I tried out the black on an old stick and it works pretty well. It ends up with a matte finish that has isn't sticky, but also isn't slick at all.

I've used the plastic dip and it does work well as Chad said. However I prefer a more tacky grip and have found Pow'r Tac Spray-on Tackifier to work the best for my taste.

On another note I was curious what the pro's use on the bench. I was recently at a Wings game and saw what looked like a big lint roller brush but with maybe a huge roll of tape rolled up on it backwards with the sticky side up. A couple guys would take a few swipes up and down the shaft with it. Anyone know?

I think this specific method has been covered elsewhere but... you hit the nail on the head. It's tape wrapped inside out, usually on a broken stick shaft of some sorts. I have seen both black and white tape used. If I remember correctly Datsyuk is notorious for this stick-gripping trick. I use it myself on my clear 10k's, hasn't really wrecked my glove palms either, just discolored them a little (I use black tape).

That's pretty common, but completely the opposite effect from what the original poster was trying to do. It adds grip by making the shaft sticky.

Yeah I don't want the tape method. Not after a sticky grip, more of a matte finish.

Anyone try plain old Krylon clearcoat spray? Seems like it would work.

I just got Stickum by Mueller and when it dries its sticky. Haven't used it on the ice yet but not sure if I like how it feels. I need to find some of Plasti Dip.

If thats the case I rememeber a few years back. I think it was Chad that told me about this product called no skid. It was a spary that would give you that sandpapaer feel, like the old Innovative Polarfiber. I used that on one of my TPS sticks. It worked awesome. Actually I still have that stick and it still has that feel to it.

Is the matte finish your talking about similar to the harrow matte finish feel? If so I'm off to Lowe's to find some, the stickum I tried I don't care for. Now I need to try to get it off and apply this stuff.

Haven't tried one of them, sorry. Unfortunately, I've only been able to find the black spray locally. I may have to order some online.

I just got done coating my two one 95 shafts. I was thinking about doing what Harrow offers with the grip shaft. With the matte and grip but decided to spray the whole shaft where my bottom hand goes. Hopefully it turns out good. My local lowes had black so went to a local store and they had two cans of clear. Pretty excited to see how it turns out. I"m sure I will like it better then that sticky surface that stickum has. Should have thought it through first but didn't find out about plasti dip until today. Anyone else try this stuff and like it? Is it similar to the bauer grip? my friend has gonchar one 90 shafts that are grip and was wandering if its like that.

I have searched everywhere for this stuff and was finally told that it is not available in Canada anymore. What's up with that? Is there some strange chemical in it that Canadians are not allowed to come into contact with? I'm so tired of being "protected" by my government. Must be the same reason I can't buy Apple Jacks up here. Probably the same chemical.

LOL! I'm sorry about that. No not that I know of but I'm not a chem specialist. Likely I found it at a local store literally four blocks from my house. My local Lowes only had it in black. It was good the local shop had clear.

If anyone is driving from Hamilton to NJ for summer jam, maybe they can bring some back for you.

If I remember right, I clear plasti-dip sprayed some of my synthesis shafts back in the day. I did a few coats but I remember it pealing really quickly and easily. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Me.

I tried scuffing the gloss off the shaft, and also tried putting down an adhesion promoter first, but it still peeled.

If anyone had any success keeping it on I'd love to hear it, because I really liked the feel while it lasted.
