Shooting Pad

Recommended Posts

I'm not to sure if this topics been covered since I didn't find to much using the search on here, but here it goes, I'm trying to build a shooting pad for my porch and wasn't to sure about where to find the materials. So far all I know is that people make them out of 3/16 thick HDPE but I can't seem to find anything like that at my home depot. Does anyone have any advice on making these or know where you can find the material at? Thanks.

I would first suggest looking into 'Thrifty White Board' found at any big hardware store. It's a thin plywood sheet coated with a slick plastic film which pucks slide around on with ease. $12 for a 4' x 8' board that you can cut down to any size you need. Spray on some silicone lube ($4/can) and it's as slick as ice.

If you're set on going with HDPE, there should be plastics shop around you that carry sheets. TAP Plastics would be my local place, not sure if there's any around you.

I went to Wal-Mart (yah yah) tonight looking for some DIY ideas on a shoot board since I don't want to mess up my blades and found a nice sized cutting board for 14 bucks, it was a good thickness and could probably buy 3 of them put together to make, but after seeing the Thrifty White Board I think I'm gonna make one out of that instead.

If you have offices in your area, look around for those doing a renovation. You can get:

- whiteboard

- plastic sheet (used for carpets and the office chairs roll on top).

Both are pretty decently sized, and the plastic sheet is normally very durable and is about 3ft by 3ft. If you can get the whiteboard from the conference room, you might be lucky enough that its big enough to do a tape-to-tape type passer.

There's lots of cheap ways and expensive ways to do it.

here is the way I used to do it 2 summers ago. Super ghetto, but the only way I could afford it.

Used there was just a piece of plexiglass from the "glass" at the rink I used to work it. It's about 3/4 inch thick. Used silicone spray to make the pucks glide better. Worked pretty nice.

Next, if you have the money. This is my next investment.

go to 3:30 in the video.

he's using this ...

For anyone using a whiteboard........Will it crack if you take a ton of slapshots?

Ive been using whiteboard for a couple months now and it has held up fine and you can't beat the price of 12 dollars for a 4 x 8 piece

I'm thinking about going with a slab of white board since I can't seem to find any type of plastics place around my house. Has anyone had any problems cutting the white board down? I'm worried about it splintering bad and eventually peeling up.

I had the guy at Home Depot cut my white board into three 4' x 2' 8" sections with their giant saw and it came out fine. The very very edge was a little roughed up but it's only maybe 1/8" affected around the edge. The plastic coating doesn't really peel as long as you keep it dry for a long period. I've left mine out in the rain for a couple days and it started bubbling up on me.

I actually have a shooting pad I bought for $35 a few years ago. Was just curious as to how the white board held up

I used to have one my old coach gave me (forgot to give back and graduated lol) but apparently my mom thought it was trash....grrrr

Thanks for the replies guys! All info helped out a bunch. I called up Tap Plastics and got a good deal on a 4'x4' square of HDPE.

Ive been using one of my school's old dry-erase boards ever since my club got our own room to remodel for our news studio. The thing is about 4'x2' and slides great, about 7 months now

I'm making my own shooting pad as we speak, it's 4 x 2.5 white board I got at Lowes for 10 bucks, they had a 8 x 6 for 80 cents more but I think that was excessive. I used an outdoor rubber floor mat that was cut to size and sprayed adhesive to the rubber mat and evenly placed the white board on it. I used a puck to make sure it sits even without bumps and placed pucks stacked up 5 on each corner and edges and let it sit for about 20 minutes. I sprayed the Silicone spray and used shop towel to apply it evenly over the surface. I allowed it to dry 5-10 minutes and wiped it all evenly and applied another coat.

I definitely recommend the silicone spray and the outdoor rubber mat. Unfortunatley the weather is crap outside but did some stick handling and works amazing.

Screw paying $150-300 for a shooting pad.
